In the ineterview for the LA Times, the "confession" is lead up to by the interviewer saying Jane had "gotten a lot of grief in the gay media" for his previous comments concerning "Hung" - that he'd quit the show if his character starts taking on male customers. Maybe Jane was simply making up the stuff about the sandwiches to appease said media by demonstrating that he is far from homophobic? Or maybe he said those things to stir up some controversy around himself and get into the limelight? After all, in that very same interview he says that "controversy breeds discussion".
Note that I'm not speculating Tom made it up just because I couldn't bear the thought of him as a male prostitute in real life. Quite the contrary, I'm aroused at the thought of it. I'm not denying the possibility that he was telling the truth, but the whole thing with the sandwiches seems like it could be a publicity trick. If it is, it worked, but it's already staring to fizzle out.
Here's the article, if you haven't read it yet, though everybody seems to have by now:

To me it sounds like he was trying to downplay what he did. I didn't have sex with guys. I let them take me to lunch and buy me a sandwich is all. Right..like anyone is going to believe that. Santa Monica Blvd. is where men went looking for young guys to have sex with. Not to take them to lunch.
