<p dir="auto">There's nothing unique about his style and he didn't make anything groundbreaking. Britain was always good at stage drama, he just translates it into films.<br />

<p dir="auto">If you had to pick the best director of british films in the last couple decades, you couldnt really go past Leigh.</p>

<p dir="auto">I don't think he's an auteur, let alone THE auteur of any cinema at all. He just happens to make good life-like drama with rather ugly looking actors that look and act very much like your neighbours.<br />
