My Review for Hills Have Eyes:
While traveling in a trailer to California through the New Mexico Desert, a family is misled to a shortcut going to nowhere by the owner of an isolated gas station and wrecks the car in a rock. Along the night and on the next day, they are attacked by a group of deformed cannibals, fruit of the atmospheric nuclear tests conducted by USA from 1945 to 1962 in that spot. Absolutely trapped by the psychotics, they have to fight to survive.
I didn't want to watch this movie. The reason is because the critics said it sucks and it was nasty but I watched it and it was better than I thought it was but that's not saying much. Let me start with saying this: It was predictable, well, at least for me. I did not know why I knew what was going to happen (with an exceptional last 15 minutes).
This movie is slow. Nothing happens in the first forty minutes or so which is kind of boring, if you ask me. When it does get moving, there are many horror clichs, throughout the film. The characters are doing stupid things to get themselves killed. Then this movie frustrates people because of these clichs. Then it turns mean spirited, killing people for their entertainment, but that's only a segment of the film.
The only "good" part in the film was actually the unpredictable last fifteen minutes. Finally, the characters do smart things and fight back, like a revenge flick. But so and so, there has to be an open sequel, which of course leads to The Hills Have Eyes II. I wonder if that film can have more clichs.
I actually liked the whole performances by the whole family. They were realistic and surprisingly sympathetic when they are getting hurt. I was actually surprised there is an emotional core in the film. Not many horror films have that, these days. The character development is also good. Other good things I'll note are the creature designs and the cinematography.
Horror fans will probably like this for the buckets of gore and violence. Some, like me, will not like it for the dumb characters and the clichs. It's not a scary film. It's better than what you think it is but isn't that good of a horror film. 5/10

What baby scene are you talking about? Frankly, I've seen worse movies than this in the gore factor of things, and there was nothing that scarring about it. The actors know that it's not real, and the only one that wouldn't be able to understand that was the little girl who played Katherine. Who by the way, had her parents there the entire time, and was amazing to work with. If you watch the "Making of" on the DVD, it shows that the little baby didn't even understand what was going on.
Spoiler Alert
For instance, when Lizard pointed the gun at her, the little girl thought that it was a toy, and they had to constantly re16d0-shoot the scene to try and get her to not play with it. Furthermore, she was far too young to understand the blood and gore aspect, and she was probably removed from the set when she wasn't needed directly in the scene. Most of the blood and gore was CG anyway.
Also, while watching the same video, you'll see the the entire cast is laughing and joking while filming it. It's people like you who take it far too seriously that make it something horrible and gruesome. They know that it is pretend, and they signed on to do the film, knowing what they were getting in to. Everyone on that set, regardless of how morbid and depressing the story was, had an amazing, happy time.

SPOILERS TOWARDS THE END.
everybody that thinks that hills have eyes is going to scar the children that were in it is probably either retarded or really close to being retarded. there is no way in hell you could possibly think that. they basically worked with guys dressed in makeup. it was probably like halloween to them. and hills have eyes and high tension were so much better than hostel. HHE and HT were really chilling just based on how the films panned out. in HHE the kids' families were killed in front of them and they're stuck in the middle of the desert witha bunch of mutants after them. in HT the story was creative, thought-provoking and creepy all at the same time. those were the kind of movies that you watched when you want to show a bunch of friends a sweet horror flick.

What's entertaining about gore sludge?
What's not entertaining about it? You don't enjoy a good thrill ride of blood, guts and mayhem? Certain people like myself enjoy the perversity and depravity captured within films like these. If it's too much for you go enjoy a romantic comedy.
