It was years ago now, but he didn't seem terribly happy to be there at the convention (despite being flown out to Australia, all expenses paid etc et.al)
I did try some light hearted conversation,2000 something friendly while he signed a photo I had bought of him (and had waited in line for 45 minutes for him to sign), but he was gruff and impatient.
Okay, whatever. I now work as a film director and, despite that experience, would still like to work with him as I believe he is a truly gifted and talented actor.

I met him in the late 90s at a convention. Nearly knocked him over at the bar! I found him very polite and happy to chat. I've got good memories of meeting him.

After anyone has a ton of people set upon them, they may not act like your best friend. I see compliants about actors not wanting to hug or take pictures.
Can't say that about Claude Akins whatsoever.
I went to a convention in the late 80s and Mr. Akins was representing one of the vendorsgreeting people, taking pics with them, and signing autographs. When I met him it was late afternoon and he had been on his feet all day greeting convention goers.
Yet he was extremely laid back and very cool. He put his arms around my brother and me, and had a pic taken for each us. He had this huge smile throughout, and was not gruff, short, or otherwise impatient with the fans in any way. As he autographed my picture I had a chat with him about all the terrific shows he had been in, and I asked him about Kolchak the Night Stalker. He was very down to earth, and said he never thought it would be that popular and that he remembered the job fondly.
So this isn't necessarily true about everyoneMr. Akins was a class act that day, and it's one memory that always makes me smile when I recall it. I still have the photo!

Totally agree with your assessment of his talents. He seems criminally underemployed since "Deep Space Nine", too. I sympathize with your experience. It's awful to go to a convention (we sacrifice time and energy, too!) and pay for an autograph and not even get a nice interaction, which is really why we're there.

Well, I met him back in the 90's and am guessing his hearing was okay back then. It's cool though. I'll always be a great fan of his work.

Don't ever, EVER, take a slice of time when a person is at a 'convention' of all things, to judge them. Most guests have had no sleep, hell trips at the airports, long flights, long waits in line for the hotel, bad transportation stories.
I've dealt with celebrities before at conventions. It's usually the TRIP FROMda0 HELL for them. Be forgiving. The only real way is to gauge how they interact with others over a long period of time
Yes, yes and yes!
After anyone has a ton of people set upon them, they may not act like your best friend. I see compliants about actors not wanting to hug or take pictures. Geez, you're only the 70th person that day to ask.
Also, they are NOT their characters.
It's a job for them. They may not even like their show or role. They might have had bad newsanything could have happened.
BE KIND. Say thanks for what you get and move on.

Nor do I hold it against Mr. Alaimo, and nor am I judging him, it was just my experience at that moment in time. Having said that, he had already been in Australia for several days, so I guess he was already pretty rested and had actually been doing some sightseeing.

I remember a sci fi actress who is famous for being friendly and accessible, but who happened to have a terrible migraine headache the one time I had to talk to her. She was nonetheless, a bit short with me, but I didn't hold it against her.
