I saw him on an episode of Psych and he seems to portray another one of his many idiotic morons. I want to know if he really is stupid or if he is just a really good actor who has been typecast.

No disrespect but you're on imdb so examples of his work are all around you. I really don't know why these type of questions pop up here. Is "so and so" really that "stupid",etc. These people are actors and if they have people thinking that they are as dumb as some of the characters they portray then they are pretty good at their craft, lol! Peace.
He is risen!

I first came familiar with John Amos on "The West Wing" as Fitz. Now his character was an admiral with the U.S. Navy, and was Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Fitz was a constant feature in the situation room with POTUS, making major, drastic decisions.
In other words, no, John Amos is not stupid. Some characters he has portrayed may have been on the slow side, but he has also played sharp, strong characters as well.
"Then where does the power come from, to see the race to its end? From within."
