Evelyn Ankers (1918-1985)
The undisputed scream queen of Universal Horror, Evelyn Ankers was born in Chile to British parents, and began acting in films by the age of 18. An appearence on Broadway in 1940 led to attention from Hollywood, and ultimately a contract with Universal, where she became the most popular leading lady in the horror unit. After starring in "The Wolf Man" (which utilized her scream to full advantage), she appeared in "Ghost of Frankenstein", "Captive Wild Woman", "Son of Dracula", "The Mad Ghoul", "Weird Woman", "Jungle Woman", "The Invisible Man's Revenge", and "The Frozen Ghost", as well as 20 other non-horror Universal pictures. She retired from acting in 1960

Encore's Western Channel has been showing reruns of the Clint Walker series CHEYENNE, and it was thrilling to see 40 year old Evelyn Ankers in her last television appearance, looking pretty much the same as she did at Universal. She also made a great femme fatale (scantily clad!) in 1947's THE LONE WOLF IN LONDON. Alas, the opportunity was there for her to appear as governor Richard Denning's wife on HAWAII 5-0 but she preferred to remain retired. I recently found a copy of 1941's NORTH TO THE KLONDIKE, her first film opposite Lon Chaney, which wasn't released until one month after THE WOLF MAN.

They should really have done more on the actresses, especially her. But a good book.
