Even if he did have a small role, I thought he did a sterling job as the decidedly corrupt Michael Hunsaker, as he went from being painfully distraught to being very honest (about the drugs ring) and ultimately indifferent about what he was involved with. Hunsaker was a pivotal figure in the plot, involving Vietnam veterans smuggling drugs from the Far East. After his death, the action kicks in with Mel proving himself to be the definitive 'lethal weapon'.
For me, Lethal Weapon (1987) was the best of the series, combining witty dialogue with convincingly violent action and an unstoppable pace. If Shane Black wrote the sequels, then this gritty trend in adult storytelling would have continued and the series wouldn't have been overcome with Joe Pesci and banal comedy moments.

Another vote here for the original being the best.

The OP is spot 16d0on. Tom Atkins was great opposite Danny Glover before his character was eliminated by Shadow Company. Plus, Lethal Weapon (1987) is absolutely the best of the series.

I LOVED the first film but I have to say the sequel was much better.
Atkins was great in there though, loved his performance.

Atkins was good but in retrospect the original Lethal Weapon looks a lot different in comparison to the sequels.
Its that man again!!

I love Lethal 1 and Atkins rocked in it, but I love Lethal 2 the most.

Lethal Weapon belongs to the same traditional case like Godfather series or Rambo series - the first sequel was always the best !
