You're taking this quote out of context.
George Clooney made this comment as a joke, when asked if he would run for office. The joke being that once someone runs for office, they immediately go digging in your past. It's like a pun.
I remember reading that George said that he was just 'not good' at being married. That could mean anything. Maybe he's too selfish to compromise in a commited relationship and wants to do his own thing.

Maybe she is the only woman he has ever loved but he cheated on her so she left him and he still pines for her? We don't know what happened in their marriage. She could have been the one snagged.
