I wish we would've learned more about Mr. Ellsworth's past in 'Deadwood'. I'm currently re-watching this incredible show, and as I'm sure many of you have noticed, he wears a belt buckle that says 'C.S.A.', abbr. for the Confederate States of America. So likely he is a veteran of the Confederate Army, unless he found/bought/stole the buckle. But assuming he is a veteran, it would've been interesting to know a little more about his military past. The buckle itself would suggest that he could've been a officer even, as enlisted men usually were issued those smaller, oval 'CS' buckles.
We know Doc Cochran served as a field surgeon, though not for which side heserved. I can not recall anyone ever calling mr. Ellsworth's attention to his Confederate "accessory" during the show, but maybe former Confederates were a commonsight out West during the years after the war, and not many among the ragged miners felt very patriotic about the
'Stars and Stripes'.

Mr Jim Beaver. I know the chances of you writing back are slim but I have to hope anyway.
I just wanted to leave a message to you. My wife and I love your acting. Especially in supernatural. We are huge fans of the show for years and loved every episode you were/are in.
I'm in my early 30s and she late 20s, so we totally get the parental guide that you gave to Sam and deals which you pulled off with perfection.
We hope to see you in future episodes and projects in the future.
Take care of yourself and keep up your fantastic work. The very best of look in the future with everything.
P.S that latest episode with rufus was golden.

Your reply is much appreciated, mr. Beaver. Adding a little mystery to mr. Ellsworth's character was a stroke of genius. I can only speak for myself of course, but I think that little things like that lets the viewer's mind run free a bit, to make of it what it wants.

It was my choice as an actor to add the buckle to Ellsworth's outfit as a way of suggesting a history for the character. Nothing in the script ever alluded to it. It was simply my way of providing a hint of background.
