I always liked Ed Binns, just saw him in a
Fugitive
episode on MeTV. He was always good, tended to play hard-nosed guys with a heart. There was a somewhat of a shell to him beneath which one sensed inner decency. His generation, with their memories of the Depression and the world war, had a real world quality ingrained in them that one almost never sees in younger actors today. Streetwise is another way of putting it. Binns and others like him played guys who'd been around.

He was a superb character actor. I was looking at his credits, and it seems he was in almost all the 'quality" Tv shows; M.A.S.H, The Defenders, Slattery's People, Route 66,etc. The amazing thing is the subtle differences he brought to every character.

He was superb as Eisenhower's Chief of Staff in "Patton" and I just got done watching him as the Cardinal in "The Verdict". An oustanding and very underrated charector actor. His voice was superb as well.

A good actor who was a nice added addition to one of my favorite classic TV shows, "It Takes a Thief".

I agree. He was very good and brought a certain quality to every scene. Nice to see that other people remember him too.

Watching 'Compulsion' now and agree that this wonderful actor should be recognised more. A true giant of theatre and film.

I don't see ANY actors of his quality around now.
In some ways, as far as I'm concerned, their have been several eras of acting.

1. theater
2. silent films
3. early studio film making'
4. Post studio films finding their way in a maze, lucky to have great leading actors along with great character actors.
5. and now .. the MINDLESS ERA.. (or.. hey, where's my plankton)
   the mindless era, in the majority, exists solely to fill programming airspace for TV..

in many ways he is beyond compare. the essence of compelling.

Agree with all you guys. I really miss a lot of the great character actors of 60's and 70's television, and Edward Binns is one of them. I enjoyed his performances tremendously- The Fugitive, Hawaii Five-O and The Twilight Zone come to mind, among others.

He was definitely one of most active character actors during my prime TV-watching years. He was always good. His Frank Grady in "Fail Safe" was great he and Dan O'Herlihy carried most of the emotional weight in a very powerful film.
