He wasn't all that beautiful.
His nose was too long and his forehead too narrow. His lips were 'dribbley' and his brows wrinkled as though he we5b4re straining to understand what was being said around him.

Tennessee Williams said the USA is the only country in the world where it is possible for a man to be beautiful and not to know it. Italians are never so silly. Brazzi was a movie star in large part because of his beauty, and sometimes he WAS more beautiful than his leading lady (and when he was, the leading lady probably made her concern about it known). Why shouldn't he know it too, if everybody else was saying it?
Thrown away.

Well, he is most certainly beautifulI think he probably made that remark as a 'dig' for being touted as such a hunkHe was likely being sarcastic.
Six inches is perfectly adequate; more is vulgar!' (Prime of Miss Jean Brodie Re: An open window).

The remark isn't necessarily meant to convey that he thought himself beautiful or spectacularly handsome, so much as that his leading lady was not beautiful/attractive in his opinion.

It's a funny remark, although not a very flattering one - to him, I mean.
But I wonder, did he really say it?
And if he did, did he actually mean it - or was it just a joke?
There's no way of knowing.
Unless there is a reliable source regarding all of the above, of course.
(If there is, I'd love to read about it.)
