I think I know why he was considered repulsive by the Sunnydale High Population. WILLOW! Lets face it in the beginning of the series willow was a bit of a geek but Xander was her best friend and loved her unconditionally (As a friend). The association with Willow placed Xander in the geek group, which he readily accepted and embraced. No matter how hot you are, the people you hang with can bring you down

Nick is really hot. I have to agree with Joss Whedon that he was way too hot for the role of Xander whom nearly all the girls of Sunnydale seemed to find repulsive. I think if Xander existed in real life (looking exactly like Nick of course) he would've been a total catch. I mean he's sweet, funny, and good-looking.
