Get Low is an indie. Robert Duvall was considered a likely candidate for the Academy Award for Best Actor but was ultimately snubbed. He should have been nominated.

I always liked Mel Gibson regardless of his personal life, which I care nothing about. Gibson brought a lot of personality to his films, especially Mad Max. By comparison, Tom Hardy was stiffer. Fury Road had great action but the characters/story was underwritten. Only Furiosa & Nux made an impression. I wanted to know more about Max and Immortan Joe but got very little.
Gibson might have been better, but that doesn't matter to casting directors and studios. They only see Gibson's faded star power, negative public image and age. Plus, Gibson expressed disinterest in doing a new Mad Max for years.
As for Hollywood, it's just like the music industry. The mainstream has very little offer. The studios/labels used to have businessman with artistic experience running them. Now it's run by corporate suits, investors and venture capitalists. You gotta go indie. That's where the artists, originality and creativity is. However, Fury Road was
aesthetically
brilliant (thanks to George Miller, an artist from a different era).

Not a very forgiving lot are y'all? Didn't know that about the Hangover crowd, thanks for that info. Haven't watched any of the Expendables, just nothing new or original coming out of hollywood anymore. Seems like y'all out of new ideas.

Passion was a huge hit because of a large Christian audience (10 years ago). It's also of note that this movie began Gibson's public relations nightmares. As an actor, every film he's done since 2010 except Expendables 3 was a flop (5b4and he got a Razzie nomination for Expendables 3). He hasn't directed a film since 2006. Gibson's long absence from acting and numerous media controversies destroyed his public image, and his box office status. Even the cast of the Hangover refused to work with him when director Todd Phillips wanted to cast him.
So I imagine with Gibson's disinterest in Mad Max, and the controversy/failure surrounding him, the studios felt a new Mad Max would maximize success rather than risk it on Gibson who has yet to regain the public's confidence in him as a person or an actor in worthwhile films.

How much did The Passion make? I'd call that Heft.

Mel's too old, controversial and lacks the box office heft he once had.

I think it's very cool also but really, Mel couldn't do Max again? I was negative about the remake of True Grit until I saw it so I'll hold out till I see this but really, Mel could have done Max again.
