tonantzin was an aztec mothering goddess whose identity was usurped by the virgen of guadalupe.
the name properly pronounced in nahuatl is "toh-NAN-tsy". its like nancy but with a tsu instead of a suh. the ending n is dropped and the final sylable is pronounced cut-off, much like in french. the ending -tzin makes the word more formal or reverent. thus the name malinalli became malintzin (mah-LIN-tsy). the simple tounged hispanic invaders just called her marina or dona marina.

there are many nahuatl languages and not all of them are the same..
Nican means Here as does Nica and Nico depending on the region and language.

I hear you. It's impossible to be definitive about name and place pronunciations, regardless about what should be correct.
I will be seeing Tonantzin in about a week for some pickups, so if you can give me enough ammo, I will attempt to set her straight.

hmmm. not surprising i guess. former sonics coach nate mcmillan always called himself "mac millan" before reporters taught him how his name was pronounced and the difference between scots and irish. now he seems to pronounce it right. i also know a mexican named "yolotzin" and she pronounces the final N as well. i wish we had a nahuatl scholar available (i know it is studied in US native american programs) to clear it up. or even any native speaker as there are still some 1,000,000 nahuatl speakers mostly in mexico. i was always taught to swallow the final N.

Tonantzin, however, does not pronounce her name that way. We worked with her on an independent film (Imprint), and it it sounds more like toh nant 'seen. Regardless, she seemed to enjoy the various ways people involved in the project mangled her name.
