I wonder why he was shot.
Apparently it was justified homicide but I have grave doubts.

I share your doubts.
Especially after I've read this:
According to restaurant employees and friends, Cooke was carrying a large amount of money at Martoni's. Well, the witness accounts were consistent.
No one saw his death, except the woman who shot him and claimed self-defense.
There was no proof she murdered him.
No evidence, no case.
