Wow, I'm glad my original post started a very good discussion. I just hope Usher, good God, is not going to play Sam. Nick Cannon? Did someone mention him? Uh, no! lol
I think in the end, perhaps an unknown, or relatively unknown would be the best. On the other hand, having someone well known (like Jamie Foxx in Ray) may make the film more accessible to a wider audience.
Besides that, the script has to be great. I know how some biopics can be, just downright horrible!!!
Speaking of biopics, I recently saw Control, a British film about the lead singer of Joy Division, which, posters on here may or may not known, since they are not R n B lol, but an 80's English post punk group, whose lead singer committed suicide, but my point is, they casted a guy who, weeks before, was folding shirts in a clothing warehouse. And he did so well the critics are raving!
I would like to see a movie with a strong script and great actors about Sam Cooke. It's been almost 3 years since my original posting, and it doesn't appear anything is in the works??????

ABKCO just announced that they finalized the script based on Guralnick's book and all they're looking for now is a "star" and a director.
http://nymag.com/daily/entertainment/2011/03/this_sam_cooke_biopic_loo ks_li.html
I hope they are not planning on casting any current R&B singers. Meaning Chris Brown or Trey Songz. NO! NO! and NO!
Anyway, I already had my dream cast in mind.
"Mr. Soul" directed by Michael Man
Sam = Anthony Mackie/ Columbus Short I cant choose
Lisa = Kirsten Kreuk
Bertha = La Tanya Richardson
Barbara = Jurnee Smollett

I'm glad someone mentioned William James Jones. I have always wanted him to play Sam. Now he would perfect with a capital P. Wesley Jonathan is a second choice. Sam had a gorgeous smile, looked good in sweaters, and there was something about his personality that made him seem lik5b4e a perfect gentleman. I really hope William James Jones is picked.

Hi, Lovely!
I've got THE SCRIPT - WONDERFUL WORLD: A SAM COOKE STORY
Believe it or not, after doing all the research and finding out as much as possible in the public domain, my favorite singer whispered to me what REALLY happened and it wasn't him doing real bad, it was a set up for Christmas cash he had on hand simple and true - Sam told me so.

You are so right regarding the resemblance not being as important as the quality of acting. Angela Bassett looked nothing like Tina but she put on one heck of a performance as Tina.

Funny you mention Chiwetel. I just left a comment at his IMDB message board commenting on what a great actor he is! I saw Dirty Pretty Things recently, and he's amazing! He doesn't look like Sam, but in the end, I don't think it's the exact resemblance that really matters, but more about whether the actor can capture Sam's "essence" that counts.
