Soljagurl2003,
I definitely understand your point. Well according to a few books, Sam had actually settled on Barbara after having decided to marry one of the mothers of his children. Actually, it wasn't until he had become informed of her pending marriage to another man that he finally proposed. For years I have been under the impression that although Barbara had never forgotten Sam, she didn't pursue him tirelessly until he had achieved national fame. Instead of taking care of herself, she wanted to be taken care of and live the luxurious life she so desired to live; Sam was the winner in that aspect. How fast she jumped at his proposal, although she had planned to marry someone else, as well as certain things she would do in order to be significant in his life leaves me suspicious regarding her intentions. However, they fooled around on each other but I think Sam couldn't handle the counterbalance, on her part, to his own actions. I honestly believe he was torn between the family life and his penchant for women in general.
So in essence, he may have had love FOR her for the sake of their children. But having been IN LOVE with her, it sounds unlikely.
I have yet to think of a signature. When I finally do, I'll include it.

I didn't mean that his adultery justified his murder, but what did get him into that situation was his love of women. Are you saying that because all those people were celebrities that it was only fate to have several affairs and abandoned children around the country. If it was love that kept Cooke and his wife together, than what was it that kept him continuing to have several girlfriends and lovers outside of his marriage.

were not saying he was a saint, just like ray charles, berry gordy, jackie wilson and nat king cole who had a series of gfs and kids(however nat was dating a swedish blonde when he died. no kids from that relationship).you have to know musicians to understand.my father was a singer, and my mom knew about his on the road habits.of course she was hurt but she knew the road,it was love that kept them together.im sure sam loved barbara, but i think all in all it was "love" of the past that they shared.she knew about the girls but in the end i think she just wanted to be loved by sam.were all not saints, that shouldnt be determined if we should be murdered or not in watts.

Someone once said, "Sam Cooke didn't need to rape anyone. Women were trying to rape him". By the way it's raped..not "rapped", as you spelled it.If you're going to be critical, at least, learn to spell.

No offense, but you're asking to stir up a5b4 LOT, I mean a LOT of trouble here, especially considering that Sam's great-nephew frequently visits this forum. Now, you've made me a bit cranky, so I'm going go off on a bit of a tangent. If I offend anyone, I apologize. Much of Sam's reputation is stomped on because of the inaccurate facts regarding his death. Let us take the story of Sam's death. He meets 22-year old Lisa Boyer, a prostitute, at a restaurant and takes her to a $3.00/night motel, specifically the Hacienda. Meanwhile, keep in mind that in the Hacienda, the only recollection of events comes from Lisa Boyer. In a nutshell, she stated in court that Sam was going to rape her, but she escaped, taking his money and his clothes. Meanwhile, Sam chases after her and eventually gets shot by the motel owner. Now, let's poke a bunch of big holes in the official story.

Boyer testified that she met Sam that night at a "Hollywood dinner party" and that Sam even sang a song at the party. In fact, they met at Martoni's, and there's no indication Sam stood up in the bar and sang to the other patrons.

Boyer said she was "kidnapped" by Sam, and said the only reason she didn't hop out of the car and run away en route to the motel was that Sam took the freeway and was driving too fast. But when Sam went into the motel office to register, he left Boyer in the car. She could easily have left at that point or run into the office and as2000ked the manager to call the police. She did neither. She got out of the car and followed Sam into the office and, according to Franklin, "didn't say a word."

If Sam had, in fact, intended to "rape" Boyer, it's highly unlikely he would have used his real name which was rather well-known in those days when signing in at the motel office.

According to Boyer, Sam didn't hesitate to leave her alone in the motel room while he used the bathroom.

Boyer said she mistakenly took Sam's clothes when she fled the room meaning that she didn't notice that in addition to her sweater, shoes, handbag and dress she also had a man's pants, shirt and sport coat under her arm leaving Sam with nothing but an overcoat. Did she take his clothes deliberately to get the wad of cash he had flashed and to prevent his pursuit? If so, that would explain why the police never found Sam's credit cards or the "thousands" of dollars Joan Schmitt recalled seeing. Granted, the cash and credit cards could easily have fallen out of Sam's pockets as Boyer ran from the motel, but since the phone booth she ran to was only a few houses away, it seems likely they would have been found by police had they been lost along the way.

If you would care to do some actual research, instead of spitting a terrible insult to both his fans and his family, you would see that the coroner's inquest was a COMPLETE JOKE and contradicts itself numerous times.

Finally, a Dr. Rodney Muhammad recently wrote a pathology report concerning Sam's death, choosing to use scientific data, rather than the evidence of the trial. I'm not going to go into great detail about it here, but it's very different from the "official" version of events.
Again, I apologize if I offended anyone. Just got a bit worked up about Sam - like many others, I get frustrated when people use the "official" version of events to make judgments about his character.

Matt
