I think it is interesting that Jack Dodson appeared in two Sam Peckinpah movies: "The Getaway" and "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid". In "The Getaway" he played a variation of the same character he always played, the gentle kind hearted kind of doddering veterinarian who is taken hostage and in "Pat Garrett" he is cast against type as one of the oily businessmen/ring leaders who try to pressure Pat Garrett during a meeting with Gov. Wallace. I wonder if Sam Peckinpah just saw something in him that he liked?

Yes, talk about emasculation. And to be done wrong by sweet little Gloria Bunker and mean, nasty Virgil Solazzo!
The world economy will crash in 2016, so for now, have fun!

I was fascinated that he went from such a mild mannered show like The Andy Griffith to the violent movie The Getaway. His character was so pathetic, but that was because he did a good job of acting the part.

Jack Dodson kept "The Andy Giriffith Show" going. His character was funny too, in his own way.

That's probably exactly right. Jack Dodson seems very likeable in his roles, often as variations of Howard Sprague (probably his most famous character).
You sum Jack's (I almost said Howard) persona very well as the gentle kind hearted kind of doddering veterinarian who is taken hostage because he has always proven gentle, kind-hearted and caring, and he captivated audiences for many wonderful years.
Jack was always refreshing to watch in his many roles and made his appearances entertaining and well worth the time.
We would often be sorry if our wishes were gratified. sop
