I do NOT condone drinking and driving. He absolutely does indeed have to answer for what he did.
The important thing is that he learns from it and never does it again.
My sister is right now on a suspended license for the same thing. She feels bad about it and realizes she could have killed somebody. She has 2 kids and knows her victim could have been a child her kids' ages. I hope she has indeed learned her lesson.
I have one juvenile record for theft (shoplifting). I had to pay a fine, was on one year probation, and community service. I am 37 now and have not been in trouble since.
Same with anyone, celebrity or not. We ALL make mistakes. We pay for that mistake and we need to learn from that mistake.

"Tipsy" driving still kills people, because the person's reflexes are slower phorcysX. "Midly" is subjective, and anytime you are fuzzy minded you are taking a chance when you get behind a wheel. Obviously car wrecks kill people who are sober, that isn't the issue. It's no different than people who text while driving, IMO. If you aren't able to 100% concentrate on what you are doing, that's a problem. The smart thing is to not drink and drive.
I'm not defending people calling him a "dirtbag", I think that's a bit harsh. Those I consider dirtbags are those who continue making mistakesbut odds are that someone has driven drunk many times for every time they are caught. In my state there are many who are on their 8th, 9th, 10th DUIs. Some people don't learn. Personally I think some people should cut this guy some slack and unleash it if it happens again. Thankfully nothing awful appears to have happened and he's being punished.
I just don't understand anyone defending drunk driving. Being a little less drunk than some doesn't mean it's safer.

True, and there's a fact that anti-drunk driving crusaders love to misunderstand: "Drunk" driving is now "mildly tipsy people getting financially savaged for municipal profit" because DUI BAC thresholds are so low. People with low body fat, particularly those on the ketogenic diet many actors use, don't always feel the effect of alcohol in the same way overweight people (i.e. 70% of Americans) do.
People in cars occasionally kill each other that's the downside of piloting large metal missiles with minimal training. I'm very sorry for anyone that lost someone to a drunk driver, but not so willing to vilify people who get the tipsy tax.

There's no excuse for drunk driving, - EVER. I'm with you. This guy may be a good actor, have a great show, but he's still a common, every-day dirtbag.

He's paid his debt to society, it's his first criminal act and its really a minor one since he didn't hurt or kill anyone (he could have, but he didn't) was he acting like a dick head? sure but he's paid fines and serving a probation.

I may be wrong but this is the only time I have heard of him getting in trouble for this kind of thing and I have never heard of him getting in any other kind of trouble. The guy made a mistake let it go and move on. This happened in 2009 and today when you look him up on line this dui is talked about everywhere. Its crazy. Yes he is very lucky that he did not hurt someone but you havent heard of him doing it again since so maybe he learned a little something unlike alot of other people out there and not just the stars. LET IT GO! MOVE ON!

Well, I am all against driving when you are drunk but Jeffrey Donovan didn't kill or hurt anybody. He didn't even crash into anything. So I think if he paid his fine people like you should leave him alone. He made a mistake. He paid for it. End of story.

In fact it is much easier to get away with driving drunk if you are not a celebrity. Here in Bulgaria you can just bribe the policemen and everything would be forgotten. This is a fact. Even if you cause an accident you can get away with it.
But if you are a movie star or a famous sportsman you are doomed. The reporters would eat you alive. Your accident will be in the news. Your career might be destroyed. That has happened here already. Is that fair? Why don't you complain about the MILLIONS of people who get away with much more serious mistakes?

It's funny you say that, I did work in the EMS 911 system . Sorry my punctuation offend you. 7 years with city unit and 2 years as an TEMT with a tactical SWAT team. I work as a Paramedic in a large Metro area and the first thing we learn is correct punctuation. Thank you for posting and looking like an idiot. Clearly, our National Standard for EMS practitioners is too low.

All I read here is rationalization and justification. People who drive like idiots sober are in the wrong but that doesn't make drunk driving ok. Both are wrong and should be prosecuted and legal authority aims to do just that.
One death from a drunk driver is too many because it is completely preventable. People don't drink and drive there is no excuse we all know it is wrong.

The funny 2000thing about people who say they'd never get behind the wheel if they had been drinking is that they're always sober when they say it. As it turns out, alcohol impairs your judgment.
So, my state says that I'm not too impaired to operate a vehicle with a BAC of .07, but if I'm .08, I can face jail time. Not only does the state know precisely how much alcohol is too much FOR ME, but they know it for everyone else too, and we all happen to have the same body chemistry.
Actually, the limit doesn't really matter, because many people on the road can't safely operate a vehicle SOBER, let alone drunk. If you ask me, the problem isn't drunk driving, it's giving licenses to morons that don't know how to drive.

If the guy paid the appropriate fine, and served any other punishment appointed to him by a Dade county judge, the issue is closed. Let us hope it remains closed. He made a bad choice and from all accounts already paid severely for it. Hopefully he won't make the same mistake again.

I have a friend whose neck was completely broken, spine severed, is in a wheelchair for the rest of his life and has metal braces on his spine and neck because of a drunk driver.
So my friend wasn't killed; he was just permanently disabled. For life.
There are absolutely no excuses for drunk driving.
I would never get behind the wheel if I had been drinking.
Drinking and driving do not mix.

You're absolutely correct. South Beach is only 5 square miles and this idiot can't take a cab back to his Penthouse8 blocks from where he was drinking. He crashed into a cop car and they still gave him "celebrity treatment". Normally he would be booked at Dade County Jail but Miami Beach Police let him go ROR.
But that's nothing new, Dante Stallworth killed a guy (DUI Manslaughter) after clubbing and got a slap on the wrist. Rich and famous gets you a pass I guess.

This is getting so absurd. You people are making a mountain out of a molehill. Because someone has a couple of drinks does not make them DRUNK. The mistake he made was consuming alcohol and medication at the same time. He couldnt have been too incb68ompetent if he was able to maneuver around the cop car to avoid hitting it. He obviously still had his reflexes. And regarding the red eyes, it could easily have been from lack of sleep. Lord knows he puts in a long work day of 14-16 hours. You people have already condemned the guy. I also dont condone drinking because I dont believe believe in it but someone shouldnt be humiliated or outcast because of it.

We had pretty cool discussions on the subject in driver's class. The point is, someone who is drunk is NOT able to make sane decisions. When you are sober, you can put in an alco lock, as I b68think everyone should. Or rather, all cars should be sold with one installed. But once drunk, the saying goes where alcohol goes in, sense goes out.
So, while sober, you should give over your car keys. While sober, you can stop someone drunk from getting in their car (talk them out of it, steal keys, pay for a cab, whatever works). While drunk, you think you can handle it. I'm not making excuses, I was bummed to read this thread, as I am a huge fan of Donovan's. And it sucked that no one was there to stop him from driving, and hopefully, he hands over his car keys before getting drunk next time.
Now I have to go watch some more Burn Notice. Jeffrey Donovan is a golden god.
