Actually, it takes on average 10 to 15 years of trying to get help before a person with Celiac Disease gets a proper diagnosis1354. In the meantime, aside from malabsorption problems, like fatigue as someone mentioned, there can be a lot of damage to other areas of the body, which can take years to heal after you stop eating the food that your body has an immune response to. Often, this is more than just gluten, and it takes trial and error to figure out what you can and cannot eat.
Plus, there is a lot of abuse or tension along the 10-15 year process from doctors, bosses, colleagues, friends, and family while you figure out what is making you sick. That takes its toll, especially when you are already drained from physical symptoms and pain.
Finally, once you do figure out what the problem is, you have to reorganize your life, finding out new ways to eat and new food to enjoy, restructuring how you eat food and celebrate occasions and holidays with friends and family, and sometimes lose relationships along the way.
Its a lot to deal with at one time. But once you do figure it out, it is just as easy as not eating what your body reacts to.
I saw that interview with Dr. Drew, and I thought that Dr. Drew was pretty contemptuous. She really had to battle him. She handled herself so well. I probably will never fully respect Dr. Drew again.

I also have Celiac (and Crohn's Disease), but I don't think it's fair to judge her based on the fact that we have the same disease. Most diseases (including this one) affect people to varying degrees, so simply having the same disease does not make one an expert on another person's struggles. I know people with Crohn's who can barely get out of bed for months, while I have had far less of a struggle with it. I see a lot of people complaining about her "milking it" or using the disease as an excuse for laziness, but one can never truly know how another person feels. I say give her the benefit of the doubt.
Very well said, BlueMonday17. I agree with you. People often fail to understand that many diseases have varying degrees of severity such as mild, moderate, and severe. Ms. Esposito may have a severe form of Celiac Disease which affects her more drastically than someone else with the same disease. Also, she may have other diseases that complicate her condition. Treatment is not simple and straightforward for every single person with a particular disease.

Also agree. My mom has Celiac. Change the diet, eliminate the symptoms.

I agree. Something isn't adding up. She should have more energy now that her immune system isn't trying to deal with gluten proteins.
