Maybe someone can explain it to me. I think that Jeff Garlin actually lends the least to Curb Your Enthusiasm (special mention to Cheryl Hines too). And while neither Larry or Jeff are Shakespearean actors, Larry David can actually act a great deal better than Jeff. His stand-up is really nothing special, save for his whole bit on the "fun size" thing. I really do think he has lucked his way into Hollywood. The guy's just not funny. A lot of his dialogue on CYE just consists of monosyllabic phrases, and I can't even recall off the top of my head anything particularly funny he's said.
So before I get the obligatory flame, can someone do me the honor of explaining why you think this guy is funny.

The character is good. Garlin's acting is not.

I don't care for him on talk shows. He seems so overly emotional.

He's my favourite character also. The way Susie talks to him is hilarious and he has some great lines "You wouldn't beep her because she had a photo of Bush?! I'd wear a Bush mask for Christ's sake!"
.the dude abides

He's my favorite character. He's sandwiched in between Larry and Susie and is the ultimate straight guy. Nothing else would work without him. In the episode where Larry was sent to the massage parlor to get a happy ending, Jeff couldn't believe Larry wanted to stop mid stream. Who stops a whack off? Funny as hell.
While Jeff seems to be in control, he is always drawn into Larry's schemes and sometimes Larry is drawn into his, like the episode when Jeff asked Larry to go retrieve his porno collections after the moved out of the house. Jeff's parents and Larry was also hilarious, with Jeff in the middle of course. Didn't you laugh when Jeff woke Larry up in the middle of the night saying, "you have to leave, you felt up my mom."

Jeff, in a way, has a tough role on the show because he's a confidant. Sometimes he's just there and helpful to the story. Not meant to be the funny one. Nevertheless a very useful character. This show wouldn't be as good without him.
