Who defines good looks? It used to be the eye of the beholder, now Hollywood tries to limit whats considered good looking because its easier to sell that way, but in all reality, looks come from perception -inside the mind- and not the eyes. So in other words, the power of suggestion really contributes to what people think is good looking.
Second, you have to understand who the people are that try to shame women by calling them ugly. These are the people who don't get women in the real world so they try to punish them online. They are misogynists, in other words and have strong dislike of women and show that through abuse. Women are comparative by nature, so comparing one woman to another, and devaluing one is an insidious way to gain power over their victims. If you could look at their viewing habits you would notice a long list of horror/gore -where women get killed-, and pornography -which is not about sex per say, but about power and domination of women -the same theme as when they shame women on the internet-.
So these are the people who say this stuff on the internet. If you saw them on the street, you would avoid them, but people have no conscience when things are anonymous on the internet.

I agree. They have a very natural beauty, and I dont know about all of them, but Mamie is very talented and has actually paid her dues. She worked in the theater for a long time before she even was in a movie and isn't like she is a star. She is a character actor for the most part. She is a working actor.

This may be true in the US. I don't think it is everywhere. Many British films and television shows feature excellent female actors that are not "Hollywood" beautiful.
An ugly man can make it much more easily than even just an average looking woman. My own opinion, as a female, is women are not always most attracted to physical beauty. There's no doubt when I saw Jude Law the first time or Brad Pitt I was very struck by their appearance. The difference is there are actors I was not struck by or even found decidedly unattractive, but because of the roles they have played they have become more attractive to me. Adrien Brody, John Hawkes, Christopher Walken, Willem Dafoe, Jack Nicholson, and Sean Penn to name a few. I never really thought Ethan Hawke or Edward Norton were attractive until I saw them in a few key roles. Ever since Lost in Translation I find Bill Murray very attractive.
I feel like a male actor can be just so so and make it. Further, they can even become sexy, because I think women are not attracted to men in exactly the same way. I'm in no way saying women aren't attracted to beautiful men. I'm saying a not so beautiful man can become attractive to women as they have more experience with them. The reverse is also true, at least for me. A man I saw as gorgeous at first site can become very unattractive if I don't like their personality. This is also true for men, but I think to a lesser degree. I do not think men are only attracted to physical beauty. I do think it is, generally speaking, more important in the list of things that make a woman attractive to many men. I also think there are women who care a lot more about the physical than other women, but I think they are fewer. I'm talking in generalities, which is difficult to do and be accurate when speaking about human experience, but I do think there is something to it. All you have to do is troll You Tube comments and the hateful comments made by men picking apart a woman's appearance can be downright disturbing. I just cannot imagine myself ever thinking like that. Much less bothering to comment.
This isn't really meant to be a judgement, but kinda, because I do think it is too extreme in Hollywood. I think we're missing out on some great female actors, because we're so obsessed with physical beauty and that's unfortunate. There is an interview on YouTube of Dustin Hoffman, another not straightforwardly handsome man, where he starts crying while talking about playing a woman in Tootsie. They couldn't make him a beautiful woman and this took him by surprise. It also made him realize he had missed out on knowing many interesting women, because he never bothered to talk to them since they weren't "beautiful." I think that's the really sad part here. How many talented and fascinating potential female actors never even try, because they know they have no chance just by looking in the mirror.

Oh please! Have you ever heard of Adrian Brody? His schnozz used to be talked about constantly. Same with Owen Wilson. Men might not get the same type of criticism, but they get it too once they are in the public eye.

Pressure that they put upon themselves due to insecurities. That want to look a certain way, they don't have too.

Is comprehensive that SJP has strong features, so some people think she is unattractive, but this is unreal.
She always been thin, athletic and considered pretty by many. She isn't a good example. Meg is even worst: she was undeniably charming, charismatic, and FAR from ugly.
There is no comparison between the standards for men and the standards for women.

Oh I agree that women viewers are part of the problem. So basically you have both men and women demanding a certain look from women. But then you have women being a lot more forgiving of men's looks.

No it's not "BOTH." Many "average" looking guys have been successful romantic leading men. There is a lot more pressure on women to look a certain way.
