The only "Mamie" I've ever heard of besides President Eisenhower's wife is the trashy 1950's actress Mamie Van Doren.

It's just an old fashioned name. My great aunt was named Mamie and she wasn't from the south or lived within 500 miles of mountains. The OP is apparently incredibly ignorant.

Mamie might be okay, but paired with "Gummer," brings to mind Mammy Yoakum from L'il Abner. (Even though Mamie and Mammy are pronounced differently.)

I agree to a point. Mamie is such an old lady name, but I don't think it's directly southern. Back in the late 1800s and early 1900s "Mary" was THE most popular name, so they came up with all kinds of nicknames (Molly, Minnie, Mamie, Macey, etc). She can not help her last name, but I definitely think that professionally Willa Streep, or even Mary Streep, would be preferable. Mamie Gummer takes me back to the 50s and thinking about dentures.

I've lived in the south my entire life, 45 years, and have only heard of two "Mamies", this one and Mamie Eisenhower. And Mamie Eisenhower was from Iowa, which is "NOT" in the south. And while Mamie Gummer's father may be from Kentucky, Meryl Streep is from New Jersey, also "NOT" in the south.

Thank goodness someone had the sense to mention Mamie Eisenhower! Mrs. Eisenhower had some stiff competition back in the 1950s though, as another "Mamie" was hugely popular on the printed page, the stage, and the screen - Mame Dennis Burnside.
