I absolutely dislike Jon Gries. Everytime the guy talks he has to clear his throat. For me that's is the sign of a bad actor and it really irritates me. It seems It's fashionable nowadays for some actors (the bad ones) to clear their throats for everything and nothing. They can't act with that annoying habit.

what's with you people? John Gries has a signature habit that directors/editors are powerless to stop and re-shoot? then he must be the best actor on earth or bullies his way into future movies somehow

by - geonet Everytime the guy talks he has to clear his throat.
I can only speak about "The Pretender" and on there he did clear his throat a lot but it was his Character, Broots was always nervous and this helped to show his nervousness and his feelings of inadequacy when speaking or presenting his case, to anyone.. I liked his character, however, and thought he added some great comical moments
Its part of his character, approved by the people behind the scenes of the show. Deal with it.

I've never seen the movie/show you mentioned with him clearing his throat, but that must have been something he added for the character. Sometimes actors give each of their character's a tick to make them unique.
Unfortunately for you, he must have chosen to have that particular character clearing his throat. In one role, he sniffs things. Another one, he's always tutting. It's normal for someone to have a habit. He's a thoughtful actor to notice that.

I hate it when actors do that "darting iris" thing just before a kiss when in semi-profilelike they are searching for something in the eyes of the persons they are kissing. Supposedly, it's just that their eyes are trying to resist the placement/slow rotation of the camera during the shot. I don't know. I just don't like it.
Makes me want to knee a goat in the teeth.

Yeah! And you know what other action I hate that actors do?blinking. I mean, what's with this continual closing and opening of the eyes? Are they trying to get little nano-second cat naps in, or what? It's like, "Hey! If you're awake, you keep your freaking eyes open, OK? Especially if you're on screen!"

WHAT?
Apparently you have no idea where to draw the line between actor and character. How are you able to judge that Broots' throat-clearing reflects Gries' insecurity as an actor? Broots is an insecure character, so how can you possibly argue that it shows that Gries must be an insecure actor? If you really did understand acting you would understand you have no basis to argue something like that.
And, no, he does not just clear his throat when he doesn't know what else to do. That is just a cop-out and means you don't understand the subtleties of acting. You know absolutely nothing about acting if you think, "To act well, you can't do this." Do not dare to deride Mr. Gries' talent just because his acting was so fully developed that you couldn't understand that acting IS everything you do in the character. If you really think that to effectively act it means you "can't" do some things, then you have a very incomplete idea of what acting really is.

You can't be serious.
Seriously.
WTF?!
Did you read an article in Variety about this growing epidemic of actors who turn to these cheap tricks, like clearing their throat or blinking, or maybe even moving their eyes, instead of the time-tested and "Geonet" approved method of acting?!
