Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and humans have this thing called "opinion" (read: a personal view, attitude, or appraisal.) Therefore it seems that "everyone" (as you put it) believe that, in their "opinion", Maggie Gyllenhaal is ugly looking. I hope that clears things up for you.

I couldn't agree more. Maggie is not a pretty woman. She just doesn't have the DNA and genes in her. She has a very pillsbury dough boy face, she looks 10 years older than she really is. And It really WAS hard to believe that batman and harvey wanted her so much in the movie, i couldn't see why. I just cringed the whole way through.

It probably has something to do with the fact that she's heinously unattractive.

I think Paris is butt ugly. Maggie is not attractive, not beautiful, I wouldn't say ugly but cute at best. Her acting is OK for me but if we're talking looks yeah she in my mind is NOT beautiful. Trolls or not call it what you will people have their own taste and if 'a person' watches all of her movies and drooling on her pictures obviously 'this person' is conditioning their own self to believe she is beautiful. Opinions can be biased, yes, and everyone has their taste and type. Who cares anyways. Irish Son, for starters, she must be ashamed of her teeth the woman never smiles, she 'smirks'. If you Google images, and you have to go to page 3 before you even know if she has teeth. As for the 'never marketed herself as a sex symbol' - again, just google images - and excepting for non-screened shots of her breastfeeding her daughter, most of the images available show her in 'call girl' attire black stockings, garters, thong panties, push up bras, some shots with clear 'bondage' quirks - soooooo, what? You think this is marketing herself as, say, an intellectual?
As to the actual question - her face is not 'ugly'; it's 'common'. From the 'top' -
The forehead, and face itself, is broadly 'flat'
The brow is too low, and 'fleshy', beneath the eyebrows, thus mostly covering her eye lids, bringing the brow down to the eye lashes
The cheekbones are significantly low, creating a 'sunken' look below her eyes
The eyes themselves significantly slant downward on the 'outside'
The upper teeth tilt inward
The upper lip has very little distinction between sides
The chin is a bit pointed
That said, the most 'unpleasant' aspects of the face are the low (and 'fleshy') cheeks, the low brow beneath the eyebrow, and the downward slant of the eyes, on the outside.
All that said, still Ms. Gyllenhaal is
not
ugly. But her face lacks the 'chiseled' features of, say, a classic beauty, like Catherine Deneuve, or the Redgraves, etc. Her face is somewhat like 'Betty Boop', only with a chin.
What the world needs now are MORE SQUIRRELS! Then there would be fewer NUTS running around, loose!

Granted everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I also believe that she's extremely unattractive. There are certain people in t5b4his world that see a strange beauty in people like Maggie, but I'm sure that the majority of movie goers would agree with me. Her eyes are a bit droopy, and combined with her pig-like nose, it's a bit strange. but I'm not perfect either. ;^P
