<p dir="auto">I can easily imagine a scenario where she and Bibi Besch as exes of Kirk could have gotten  together and mourned him as part of the Old Generation passing the torch to the Next Generation.  I can see how that would have helped justify Spock being in it as a scientist who communicated two generations of knowledge to solve the mystery.</p>

No, I don't think so.<br />
The First 20 or 30 minutes of the Movie takes place in the 23rd Century which is the time period that Catherine Hicks character was in and there is not 1 single scene in that entire 20 or 30 minutes that would have worked for her to be in.<br />
When the Movie then moves into the 24th Century (over 75 years later), Her character is at that point clearly gone.</p>
