I knew Freddie before he was an actor. Well, strictly speaking he has always been one, even before he made his living at it! I was a new assistant in the same lab as Freddie, in a chemical factory in Tamworth, Staffordshire (England), and he was a close a big brother to me as it can be for someone unrelated. I was 17 and he was a worldly-wise 27. He was a real Bohemian, living, if you can believe it, in a tool shed at the bottom of someone's garden, together with his dog Fattie. He was popular with everyone at the factory, and they would ply him with Guinness at the club until it ran out of his ears; in return he would entertain them by reciting poetry by Wordsworth or Tennyson. It was a treat to see uneducated, tough factory hands listening, rapt, to Freddie; he was that good.
Freddie took me to experience my first symphony concert. He and I used to tune into the BBC every Friday lunchtime to listen to a radio comedy show called The Goon Show (look it up). He wore a beard and his hair looked as if he'd been dragged through a hedge backwards. He also smoked using a long bamboo cigarette holder.
Now here's a bit of trivia. In "Juggernaut" he was essentially playing himself from years earlier! The lab was a satellite to the main chemical lab for the firm, located some 25 miles away in Birmingham, and in the absense of anyon16d0e more senior Freddie was technically in charge. I say technically, because he had no degree. However, he did have access to various chemicals, and his main occupation other than chasing the female staff was constructing bombs of different mixtures! He would disappear down to the bottom of the company's sports field, and a few minutes late there would be a distant BOOM and a cloud of smoke, and Freddie would reappear with a blackend face and singed eyebrows, a happy grin on his face.
One day in 1955 he said to me, "Nick, I'm off to London to seek my fortune." A few years later my wife and I saw him on an episode of The Avengers, and later still in the movie "Accident." I visited Freddie three years ago in the little village he lives in with his wife, in Oxfordshire (EVERYONE in the village knows Freddie!), the first time we had shaken hands in half a century.

Like Nick,I too worked with Freddie in the works control lab as a chemist.Freddie was quite a character but I believe his drink preference was Bass or Marstons or Ind Coupe bitter from Burton on Trent. The tool shed I remember was his place of residence as was his old Morris or Austin car. Like all of us at the time we were all broke all of the time.I am glad that he made it to the big time and comes close to being as well known as Robert Morlly who I believe he respected greatly.Since the 50's I have met with Fred at the Chichester Theater where he played in the early 90,s. We had a pint in the "Bell".He kindly autographed my program.Later met him with my now deceased wife at his local pub in Oxfordshire in the mid 90's..I remember it well . I met Fred and his family on one occasion in a small village near Gatwick Airport in the 70's-.Red Jaguar and all.Fred had made it.
Freddie was a great fellow and full of fun in the laboratory, often betting a weeks wages on our ability to recognize certain Shakespearean quotations spoken from of the workbench, upon which he stood and orated in full voice as portrayed by Sir Lawrence Olivier.Whenever I see Sir Lawrence, I am immediately reminded of Freddie.Keep up the good work and glad to see the family is following their Mom an Dad. Regards,Derek H.
