He was indeed overdubbed without his knowledge and attempted a failed lawsuit against the producers.

It's his own voice, the majority of the dialogue was re-recorded though which lead to the urban myth.
He was dubbed, but not by another actor.

I also have to agree that his voice was dubbed.
I saw Sam when he did a guest appearance in Stargate SG-1 and (I know people's voices can change over time, but) his voice was NOTHING like it was in Flash Gordon, not even close.
His voice was extremely gruff and deep, which may be the reason they chose to dub in a more professional sounding voice actor to read his lines.

I know in the early 80's movie producers were notorious for dubbing newcomers in the movies because they felt a "professional" actor's voice would work better, Andie McDowell was dubbed in one of her early films and that guy who starred in the remake of The Lone Ranger were reportedly dubbed too.

I watched FLASH GORDON awhile back and I too felt he was dubbed. It does not sound like him in his other roles. So it's very possible Sam was dubbed in this movie.

What makes you believe his voice was dubbed in that movie? Flash Gordon rocks bigtime!!!!!!! A timeless classic in my opinion.
