The film you mean is called Schachnovelle (a West German production directed by Gerd Oswald, 1960). In it, Jrgens plays an Austrian who is tortured by the SS by meab68ns of solitary confinement. In order to avoid insanity, he steals a book about chess and eventually becomes a chess genius. The film's based on a novel by Stefan Zweig.
