Curt is a prisoner. On a ship?. To avoid boredom he tears news print off the walls and makes chess men and a board . He works through some games.This is all I can remember. From 40's - 50's. Film or Tv not sure to young. Got me started playing chess. Would like to see this film agian.

In order to avoid insanity, he steals a book about chess and eventually becomes a chess genius. The film's based on a novel by Stefan Zweig.
