I mean Synecdoche bombing didn't help, but your first two directorial efforts being box office disappointments doesn't really give Hollywood confidence you can make a hit.
Of course he could always let someone like Spike Jonze direct. I love the script (and no I will NOT send you a copy)I really hope it gets made someday.
