Does anyone know the stage name of the female gospel singer who sang back-up for Chaka Khan in the 1980s and then switched to the gospel category in the 1990s?
You might wonder how I could know this without knowing her name. I will explain. Circa 2000 I was in the Northeast section of Washington, DC, and I overheard a lady's CD player. This Washingtonian was listening to a CD recorded live at a gospel concert. I could hear that the audience was passionate and noisy. The singer told the crowd that she had been one of Chaka Khan's back-up singers in the 1980s. She followed the typical urban ghetto cycle that says, "You have just two choices: church or drugs." When the back-up singer worked with Ms. Khan, she chose drugs. "I was high every day," she said of her time with Chaka.
After the drugs messed up the "mystery singer's" life, she felt something divine "rise up" inside of her telling her to switch to the only other option: the church.
I wish I knew the name of this talented African American female singer who switched from Option 1 to Option 2. She is well-known in today's gospel music field. Can anyone help?

I think Chaka Khan would disagree.there is a third choice: double-bacon cheeseburgers.
