George Lazenby was the best James Bond. How sad that his personal arrogance and immaturity cost him the role which ended up in Roger Moore's hands for so long. George was offered a deal several times that would have kept him on through A View to a Kill, but he turned it down as if to say Bond was beneath him.
Still, with that being said, all this criticism he gets is very unfair and unwaranted. His only Bond movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service is the best James Bond movie made so far, and George himself was the best Bond.

His physical fighting skills was only one skill which was impressive, that's as far as it went. His voice was even dubbed which goes to show he also wasn't cut out for Bond apart from the physical aspect.

I grew up on Roger Moore playing James Bond and I remember when I first saw Sean Connery as Bond I didn't like that idea much. But now that I've seen all the Bonds including the great George Lazenby in his only role, I must say that his physical screen presence dominates the other Bonds. What I mean by this is from what I recall most of the physical fight scenes were all him and not some stunt double. In the IMDB facts it is noted that he was a martial arts instructor in the Australian army, and holds more than one black belt in the martial arts. He studied martial arts under Bruce Lee himself. He was probably the most believable Bond in my opinion because of that. He talked the talk and walked the walk. I think if he had done more films I would have actually enjoyed his version of James Bond the most. I bought the OHMSS DVD off eBay as a single from a DVD set since they don't release this as a stand alone DVD which is unfortunate because "You are missing out!". I like collecting and watching rare DVDs/movies that people rarely get to experience. If you truly enjoy James Bond movies, get this one off eBay if you can instead of spending over 100 bucks for a DVD set that it is contained in. It's well worth it.
This movie was release in 19 "69" Guess he also lucked out on the release year.
I also love the Soundtrack to this film. It reeks of classic JAMES BOND!

Personally I think he was an upgrade over Connery. Connery was more charismatic, and had more animal magnetism, BUT Lazenby was Bond.
Just look at the pre-title sequence, Lazenby wasn't some supermodel type guy lucky to be Bond as so many people claim, no that was Brosnan, he wasn't some British stage actor who looked tall dark and handsome and thus simply was given the part like Dalton, he wasn't some superstar English gent actor like Moore who was naturallu given it because simply of that, and he wasn't a guy that was given it simply because the producer's wives thought he was sexy, which is how Connery got it
Lazenby actually got it because he was totally believable as being the guy from the books in every way, and because you really believed he could do those things you see him doing in the film. That makes him unique among all the actoirs who played the part so far, and indeed it is why Cubby Broccoli, Peter Hunt, and John Glen all said Lazenby would have been the best Bond if he simply stuck with it.

Hello! I totally agree that George Lazenby was and is the best ever Bond! On Her Majesty's Secret Service has always been one of my very favorites, I enjoy the story line, the music, the intrigue, and especially the ski scenes!!! I also like Roger Moore; come'on people, this series is a very glamourous, exciting, comic strip. George is as unsung an actor as is my favorite female-"would be"/"should be" Bond Girl-Morgan Fairchild.
I disagree completely. In fact Cubby Broccoli said numerous times they ONLY made OHMSS as it was because Connery was not in it. The fact is Connery would not have even made this type of film. The people who keep asserting otherwise know nothing of the issue at hand.

When lazenby played as Bond he had the potential but not the experience. You can't campare Lazenby to Connery because he only did one film. and Connery did six films as Bond. The only reason people think lazenby was good was because of the story in OHMSS. But lets face it if Connery played in OHMSS it whould of been the best bond film of all time. If Lazenby kept his role of Bond he would of done terrible in D.A.F Because that wasnt the greatest story and I kind of didn't like that movie even that Connery was in it. But my points still stands People only think that Lazenby was good cause of the story in the movie. I some times forget about him because in my opion from frist to last of the Bonds would be Connery,Brosnan,Moore,Dalton and Lazenby. Many poeple hate Brosnan because he is better then Moore.

George Lazenby was indeed the best Bond. I have finally acquired all of the Bond DVDs (including the awful For Your Eye's Only it pains me to say - dodgy Thatcher impression and "I BUY YOU A DELICATESSEN - IN STAINLESS STEEL !" What the heck is all that about?).
Anyway I have spent a good week getting through several veiwings of OHMSS along with all the docs and commentary and it is truly BRILLIANT. Lazenby comes across as a tough, sauve, confident and humanistic Bond. That could never be said for Moore, Brosnan or Connery or even Daniel Craig. Timothy Dalton only came close to Lazenby's standard.
OHMSS is an extremely well directed, well acted, well scripted film with a stylish edge that could have served the series well into the 70's. Shame that Diamonds Are Forever just went in another direction and then Moore came along and the series was never the same. Now Craig's Bond just wants to ditch all the traditional elements altogether - why call it Bond then? - it's just XXX or something for the mobile phone, lap top and Ipod generation.

I just saw "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," this past weekend, as part of Starz' James Bond Marathon. The last time I saw it was in a movie theatre, 35 years ago, when it was first released.
WHAT a revelation! I remembered I DETESTED the film, 35 years. What? A James Bond movie WITHOUT Sean Connery! It's funny what time can do; five different actors have now played Bond.
I LOVED it this time around! George Lazenby, perhaps, did not have the panache of Connery, but I got used to him. Diana Rigg was WONDERFUL! Telly Savalas made a good Blofeld. Jeez, HOW many actors have played Blofeld, by now? Heck, HOW many actors have played Felix Leiter, for that matter? B111cOTTOM LINE: I have revised my list of the Best Bond Movies: "From Russia With Love"
is the all-time greatest, followed by "Goldfinger" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" a CLOSE
third. The Worst? ALL of the Roger Moore movies in the series. Roger Moore was "The Saint,"
NOT James Bond. I read somewhere on another thread, that "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" OUTSELLS all the other Bond movies, on VHS and DVD. That doesn't surprise me, "OHMSS" rarely plays on television. For you teen-agers, out there, who grew up knowing Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan as 007, ask dad to shell out a few bucks and discover George Lazenby.
THIS MOVIE is a wild, wild, wild trip! You WON'T be disappointed! It contains a screenplay MUCH BETTER than MOST of the other Bond movies.
