Looking at how OHMSS ended I always felt DAF would've been one of the more better solid Bond films had they made it a revenge-type film with Lazenby's Bond returning. DAF felt out of place with the film opening up to Connery's Bond looking for Blofeld. I would've rather had Moore step in much earlier instead of Connery returning, but still my favorite movie franchise nonetheless.

I think another reason for Lazenby's leaving was that as an inexperienced actor, he probably found the job tougher than expected.

I WAS canned by the producers, although it was preceded by them trying to get me back. I've detailed this whole scenario before.

To respond to one of the posts above, Lazenby wasn't canned by the producers. While George announced in 1969, before OHMSS was even released, that he was NOT going to do a second Bond film, the producers tried to get him back. In 1970, they even sent him a check with an advance payment for "Diamonds Are Forever", but Lazenby sent the check back, feeling that he was going to go on to bigger and better things.

For the record, I quite enjoyed View to a Kill.

In Diamonds are Forever Connery looked about as much like a suave, tough, fit secret agent as Moore did in Moonraker, FYEO, Octopussy, View to a Kill To be fair to Moore he was 45 when he took on the role.
Lazenby would have been a vast improvement in DAF.

Roger Moore should have stepped down from the role of 007 after "Moonraker"
and Timothy Dalton should have agreed to take over sooner, rather than later.
As for Lazenby, he definitely should have acted in "Diamonds Are Forever" -
instead of a bored-looking, out-of-shape and vastly over-paid Sean Connery!

I'm pretty sure United Artists (not Harry Saltzman and Albert Broccoli) canned him because of the fact that it took longer for the movie to make back its money than any previous Sean Connery Bond movie. You can't take a step back when the Bond movies were getting more and more popular and successful. I just watched a featurette called Inside On Her Majesty's Secret Service where this was pretty much stated by Michael G. Wilson and a former UA president.
