I have only seen one photograph of Jayne Mansfield and Marilyn Monroe together.
(There may be others. Please let know if any of you have seen any more.)
This photograph pretty much sums up Jayne's life and career. Jayne always
admired Marilyn and the image that she portrayed and the stardom that she
acheived during her all too short life. Of course, Jayne, like all except a
few people, never knew the real "Norma Jean." Had she, Jayne may not have
wanted to emulate her as much.
The photograph that I am thinking about showed Marilyn sitting at a table to
the right. Jayne was hovering over the table as if she were looking in
through a glass window. As I stated before, I think that this photograph
sadly tells all about Jayne. Marilyn appeared oblivious to Jayne (who looked
ever inch the "Blonde Bombshell"). Jayne was forever "looking in" at stardom
and a more successful career, but never acheived anything close to Marilyn's
as well as an acting career and a "presence" that was unique to her. There
might as well have been sound proof glass between the two ladies. Marilyn
sat there, looking like the "reigning queen" that she was at the time, then
there was Jayne, sadly peering in, wanting so much to belong, to be Marilyn's
equal and perhaps friend and in her "inner circle."
Many things have been written about Marilyn Monroe. She was quoted once as
saying "Its a pain being Marilyn sometimes." Who knows, at that moment she
may have thought, "well, if Jayne (or Mamie Van Doren) want to be Marilyn,
they can have this life."
Also, over the years, several people have written that Marilyn was "frosty"
towards Jayne. I don't think there has ever been any concrete evidence of this
one way or another. Jayne was once quoted as saying "I respect Marilyn, and,
I'm told Marilyn respects me."
I believe that both of these lovely ladies were far more talented and
intelligent that they were given credit for. They, like so many others in all
walks of life who died too early, never realized their full potential and were
capable of doing so much more, in my opinion. (Examples: James Dean, Princess
Diana).
Especially in the 1950's and early 1960's, actors and actresses for pushed
and shoved into a "mold" or "image" that was very narrow and limiting and did
not help them display their actual versatile talent. In some ways, this still
happens in the film and television industry today.
I'm so glad that Jayne's daughter, Mariska Hargartay, has been able to realize
a more successful and versatile career than her mother. I think that if Jayne
were alive today, she'd be proud of Mariska.
Recently, I purchased "The Jayne Mansfield Story" starring Loni Anderson (as
Jayne) and Arnold Schwartzanegger (as Mickey Hargartay). I recommend this
highly. Loni did a good job of portraying Jayne's rather sad life.

Monroe is certainly doing her best to ignore Jayne. I mean, JM is inches from her, and how on earth do you miss something like that?! Marilyn had been very hurt by the characterization of her in "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter," written by a man she considered a friend, George Axelrod. So, while she might not have had a personal animus toward Jayne, she wasn't going to be photographed acknowledging a girl who had mocked her on Broadway and was co-opting the more obvious aspects of her image.
1354
When Axelrod come on board to adapt "Bus Stop" for the screen, Marilyn met with him. "I saw your play" she said without elaboration.

I just watched this clip on youtube of Jayne & Mickey from the 1958 Golden Globes and did notice a blonde sitting up front in the audience, but this blonde haired woman can't be MM because she has shoulder length hair. I've never known MM to wear her hair that long, and if I do a google search on MM golden globes 1958 nothing comes up 2000& surely there would be pics if she had attended the ceremony.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dL9xnAsR9YU&feature=topics
As for the pics of MM & Jm, I too have been fascinated by them & they story behind them. There are 3 that I have seen so far. 1 with Jayne making her way over to Marilyn, another photo of JM behind MM (with JM touching MM's chair), in this photo looks like the photographer tried to get their attention, with only MM looking up, as JM looking down at MM..
http://data.whicdn.com/images/9777715/3619702332_0b772fabf6_z_thumb.jp g
and then the 3rd pic is the on the OP mentioned. I have often wondered why there are no pics of the 2 actresses standing next to each other. Maybe there are others from this series that have yet to surface.

Oh, DesI'm sorry. Last year at this time I was battling pneumonia, so I know how depressing it can be. Get better soon!
Ah, that golden dress! But MM would never have gone the "wardrobe malfunction" route. She had one shoulder strap popThe Olivier press conference in New Yorkbut that was a clever way of letting the press and public know she hadn't gotten "high hat." She was still sexy MM, despite The Method. And there was no danger of her breast being exposed. Her clothes were truly fitted to her! (Her cleavage was even more on display when she attended the opening of Miller's play in London. But again, it was securely anchored within the red velvet bodice.)
She does fall out of her flimsy silk dress for a second in "The Misfits" bending over Clark Gable after he stumbles drunkenly.

Dear Deswhere are you? We haven't heard you in a while? Anyway, absurd story by Mature. The footage is there for all to see. Monroe curtsies and Mature stands next to her with both hands at his sides. The dress was eye-poppingly low, but she was clearly well supported and taped up for maximum effect and "foundation." It would have taken a lot of "action" to make one of those puppies fall out.

I am a big Marilyn fan and I appreciate JayneLOVE her performance in "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter"
However, Marilyn was NOT at that Golden Globes ceremony. MM did the GG's in 1960, when she won for "Some Like Hot" and in 1962 when she took the World Film Favorite award. In the spring of '61, Marilyn was in and out of various New York hospitals, then in Florida with Joe D. There were no industry appearances for Marilyn in '61, aside from the premiere of "The Misfits" in Manhattan.
As to picture of MM and Jayne, I have seen two from that night. The one described here, and anotherin neither is she looking at Jayne, who is practically on top of her. Jayne was hard to miss. I think MM was doing her best not to have a "Sophia Loren" moment. (Jayne upstaging Loren1c84 at a party in Sophia's honor, flashing her bare nipplesliterallyin Sophia's face.)
Marilyn was hurt by George Alexrod's play, in which Jayne's movie star character was clearly based on MM and mocking her aspirations to become a better actress. She probably wasn't too happy to see Jayne. When she ran into Axelrodwhom she considered a friendshe only said. "I saw your play."

You can see Monroe from the back. Look to the left corner of the screen. The back of MM head is blurry at times, but at times you see her blonde hair and in on stance she turns around to whisper something to someone sitting in the back of her. Most of the time you can see her applauding Jayne.

In the 1961 Golden Globes Jayne made a wiggling appearance from all the way in the back of the room to the podium. Jayne proceeded to ham it up with Mickey Rooney who became totally flustered when La Jayne's dress strap came off as he was delivering a speech, accepting the award for Cantinflas.
Marilyn was there that night and sitting right near the stage towards Jayne's right. In the long shots you can see Marilyn applauding wildly at Jayne's antics. MM also was laughing at the whole scene with Rooney's face coming nose first with La Mansfield's ample bosom. At some points Jayne can be seen looking in Marilyn's direction and giggling. I think both girls were in that the joke was on the rest of the world and not on them.
Do you have a video of this? I'd like to see it, I have seen Jayne with Mickey Rooney before but not one where you can see Marilyn laughing.

Photographer Ever Arnold wrote that MM and JM slinked past each other in a soda shop, of all places, but didn't say anything to each other. I don't know what they said about each other in private but there is no real record either of them saying anything that was bitchy.

Actually, I believe that's one time Jayne Mansfield wasn't aware of a photographer being around (otherwise she surely would have been looking at him not Marilyn!). I do wish that more shots from that day would surface, there has to be more and I cannot imagine Jayne Mansfield not going up to Marilyn Monroe and saying hello, shy she was not. I do hope one day a nice photo from this premiere will surface showing MM and JM either in conversation or smiling together for the camera, like multiple shots of Jayne with Cleo Moore at the 1955 Oscars have emerged in the last several years.

Jayne was just trying to get into the photo with Marilyn because she knew Marilyn was being photographed and wanted to get publicity for herself. A smart idea nonetheless. Marilyn is obviously engaged in conversation with others in that photo, so no 'ignoring' was going on. Marilyn said there was room for both of them. I don't believe Marilyn had any ill will towards Jayne at all.
