I saw this series on the BBC last year because of Charles Dickens, but found Miriam Margolyes to be a warm, feeling, funny and witty woman.
Traveling around the USA in the 19th century trail of the writer Dickens, she investigates and the places his feet landed on, the twang in the voices of the people there, the drinks he probably drank there, the things he left there.
Good series, wonderful actress! (I saw her in SUNSHINE/A HOUSE OF SONNENSCHEIN, 1999-Istvan Szabo, LITTLE DORRIT, 1988, and YENTLE, 1983-Streisand)

I was wondering why it wasn't on here too. I'm watching the series at the moment and really enjoying it like the above posters. I felt quite disheartened by the state the town of Cairo (pronounced K-row)was in, but liked how Miriam told you frankly how she feels about different places, even if the opinions weren't always positive. It would good if Miriam could make a similar series, but this time showing the different parts of Europe Dickens travelled around (assuming he did).

Australia is just broadcasting the series right now. Loving it so far and incredibly facinating travel/literary doco. Love seeing again all the places Miriam (and Dickens) went to, bringing back my own fond memories of time spent on cruise ships and in NY, Boston and Washington DC last year.
I find Dickens' writing too stuffy for this day and age. Facinating character but his books are just too bleak to read.
btw, how come IMDB didn't list this series on Miriam's page?
