I'm a few years late with this comment but I totally fell in love with Doug McClure the first time I saw his blonde beauty in Gidget!!

I likewise concur. Doug McClure was most definitely the man in those extremely fun 70's fantasy action/adventure romps. What I love most about McClure was that he was basically this perfectly average, yet still strong and heroic guy who kept his cool while fighting off dinsaurs and cavemen.

Yep. This guy rules. He holds a big place in my childhood memories. I re-watched all of his Kevin Connor films recently and they hold up damn well, I think. There is simply something very likable about Doug McClure.As they say on Teleport city's website: "He's just this dude,and when crazy fantastical sh*t starts happening, he deals with it." That is perfect!

I was recently reminded of Doug in a TV horror film from the 70's called "Satans Triangle" which still sends shivers down my spine. I remembered that Doug was in it.
I think the picture for him on imdb is wrong though ? the B&W picture of a portly man with curly big hair cannot really be the late Mr McClure can it ?

The film he made with Jill St John was The king's Pirate, which was a re-make of an Errol Flynn film, Against All Flags.

Trampas was a great character & Doug did a great job playing a character, who was a villain, in the film versions.
Doug had an effortless, boyish, roguish charm. I think the main reason his later career faltered, was because he couldn't play anything else (well).
He had great early success, in Checkmate and The Virginian, because of his golden beach boy looks. The studios wanted all the Troy Donahues they could find.
Plushe consumed any drugs or alcohol he could get. I never heard of him being addicted to anything, just that he liked getting high.
Around 1980, he was doing dinner theatre, here in Houston. I knew someone, a local actor, who brought him to a 24 hour restaurant I worked @. Knowing they were coming, I went by, on my night off & joined them for breakfast. Doug was blasted, but charming & friendly. We discussed his films. I had to tell him which film he fenced in (Against All Flags) & the name of his leading lady (Jill St John).
He was a total mess, but a sweet & charming guy. I regret his early death, too.

Trampas was and still is my hero. Doug played him from 1962 to 1971 and this may have restricted him from achieving larger fame in movies. But the Virginian was a great series - especially I think - the first 5 years. Doug looked so fit and strong, it is hard to believe that he would die so young. I have managed to find DVD's through ioffer. They are home produced and not always good quality but I am glad to be able to revive his memory.

Mr. Mc Clure was perhaps at his best when playing a charming, likable rascal like Trampas. He died far too young. Good post.

Doug McClure was one of my first Hollywood crushes. The Virginian reruns played forever in the early afternoon weekdays and Trampas caused me to run straight home rather than linger at the school grounds with my playmates. That shock of blond hair and lantern jaw! I remember you Doug and still love you. RIP.
