It's done all the time. Angelina as a Chinese-Black-White chick in A Mighty Heart. Jennifer Lawrence in Hunter Games. The character is white but her skin is olive. Or in something borrowed Kate Hudson's character was a tall brunette in the book. Or Nikki Reed an olive skinned brunette playing a pale, blonde or The Last Airbender characters being Asian played by white actors. They do it all the time.
A cynic is just a romantic who has seen the world.

What's wrong with not being happy with the fact that the director has a white character played by a black actress? It has nothing to do with wanting an all white society (as some ignorant person ridiculously allotted to) If the book specifically describes the character's milky white skin, then the actress should portray that. That is not prejudiceit is common sense. And what exactly is wrong with using the term "black chick"? Why would that not be appreciated?? There is a movie called "White Chicks" and no one got all bent oub68t of shape over that (although they should have since it is racist). Black people use derogatory terms to refer to white people all the time, but when a white person says black chick everyone gets all pissed off!! That is bull@$%&*!!!! Tha is reverse racism and I do not appreciate that!!!!

there is nothing wrong with parker
it's just that she was not the girl everyone imagined elizabeth would be
oh, and the 'black chick' comment was not appreciated

I totally agree. i would have never in a million years pictured her as elizabeth. the book describes elizabeth as pretty much being white with long dark brown hair. plus, elizabeth seems a lot older than parker. its just a weird choice.

I think Naylor is saying she's going to like it just to save face. I agree with whoever sent that letter. And if they really wanted to show Alice with diversity, they could have done a later book with Gwen (who is black) and Lori ( a lesbian).

I think you need to look at your own prejudices. We don't live in an all white society, so maybe the directors wanted to depict that.
You may not want to change your opinion, but however much you think that casting a black actress is a 'disgrace' to the books, you should know that the AUTHOR of the books does not agree:
And one more thing, the whole 'Black Chick' comment was just not needed. You're digging an even deeper hole for yourself.

then the directors must be illiterate, because in every book it clearly states that Elizabeth has pale milky skin and long dark hair. How the hell do you get "black chick" out of that??
I'm not changing my opinion of this movie. i'm not even going to see it-well, I won't pay to see it. I don't want in any way to support these stupid people or this absolute disgrace to the books.

WOW, I don't think you realise that movies, even if they are based on books, will never be exactly the same because it is the DIRECTORS interpretation of what they have read. There are plenty of examples of where a movie of a book has been made and a black character has been changed to a white one in the movie, or the other way round. It really isn't a point because you can't do anything about it, you never know, you might change your whole opinion after seeing the movie.
