I watched the 1971 made-for-television suspense thriller, A HOWLING IN THE WOODS, and saw that actress VERA MILES, even at age 41-42 was a very pretty woman. By the time I reached my teenage years in the 1970s and watched Vera Miles in several made-for-tv films, she was already well into middle-age and I didn't think she was attractive by then. But Vera Miles displayed very good drama acting talent, which is why she kept appearing in made-for-tv movies through out the 1970s.

I always thought her facial features were very striking, and that alone made her a remarkable beauty in my eyes. On top of that, she had an incredibly fit and sexy body. I mean yeah, a hot babe indeed. She was/is one of the greatest beauties to grace the silver screen.

Just watched her tonight in "The Spirit is Willing", easily outranking the younger chippies in the cast in both class and glamour. And plus, appearing in that barmaid costume didn't hurt yowza!

I agree - I just watched Vera in
Mission Batangas (1968)
and she was great in that as well!
I enjoyed the film, though it feels like it was shot around 1962, or early 60's.
I have to say Vera was super-hot in this film. I looked her up on here and she had won a Miss Kansas award back in the day, so she was a true 'Beauty Queen' growing up, which helped her get her foot in the door.
Vera had a smokin' hot body, nicely hidden in that 1940's kinda way. It wasn't flaunted back then, but you could tell she was in great shape, underneath that blouse, and very sultry at 39 years of age.
They just don't make 'em like her anymore! Nor films like this.
Shot in the Philipines, it is full of jungle action, shoot outs, Japanese air-bombers (from actual WWII footage), and even "head-hunters", natives of an island they must walk through, complete with poison blow-darts & spear attacks! It wasn't that bad and was definitely not predictable.
I'd give this a strong 5.5 or 6 out of 10 stars.
"Now, I know I'm pretty, but I ain't as pretty as a coupla titties!"

I think she was the hottest actress of the classic era. She was so sexy when she got angry in movies.

Although I (like many) feel that Vertigo is a masterpiece, Vera Miles in the role of Madeline/Judy would have made it even better. Vera Miles is indeed an excellent actress; Kim Novak is definitely not in the same league. The only reason why Kim Novak could pass in the role was because, as Madeline, she was able to get away with walking around as if she were in a trance. She was adequate as Judy, I must admit, but adequate is about as far as it goes. As for Vera, in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, it is impressive how she pulls off the persona of an elderly woman, and yet brings the same character to life as a vital young woman in the lengthy flashback sequence. In addition to possessing far superior thespian skills, Vera Miles was physically more attractive. Although beauty is, of course, subjective, if you appraise the two actresses facial features, Vera wins. She is VERY pretty in The Searchers (and doesnt look 26 or 27), and in Psycho, Hitchcock could easily have made her look more fetching, but she was the sensible sister, who solved the mystery of who Mrs. Bates actually was. I have not seen the photos of Vera Miles to which you refer, but I do not doubt that she would, indeed, have been stunning.

Alfred Hitchcock had Edith Head design the entire "Vertigo" wardrobe for Vera Miles and even had photographs shot of Miles111c in a more glamorous, mysterious way. She looks stunning. Miles was a very fine actress and a great beauty but she was never comfortable with the elegant blonde, femme fatale image that Hitchcock hoped to mold her in.

Heck, she was in the T.V movie THE STRANGE AND DEADLY OCCURRENCE from 1974, sporting a bikini (!) and looked great for someone in her mid forties!
Vera Miles did indeed do lots of T.V. movies in the 1970s, some quite good like JUDGE HORTON AND THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS from 1976, to the curiously interesting (at least to me), SMASH-UP ON INTERSTATE 5 from the same year.

Too bad she never starred in Vertigo. Alfred Hitchcock really wanted her for that role. He wanted to make her glamorous and beautiful. She was going to be his newest gorgeous blonde. I sometimes wonder how she would've been as Madeleine/Judy in Vertigo. It certainly would've changed the movie. I can understand Jimmy Stewart being crazy about Kim Novak in Vertigo, but I sometimes wonder how Vera would've been and how Hitchcock would've made her look. The movie would've been great for her career. Too bad she got pregnant. Hitchcock really wanted her for the role and he was disappointed when she couldn't do it.
