Saw Mozart & The Whale again today. It's been a while. Was reminded of what great performances both Josh Hartnett and the mesmerizingly beautiful Radha Mitchell created. Playing autistic characters is a tough feat. Both of them did fine work. I especially loved how Radha's character (Izzy) would laugh without the ability to socially censor herself. She'd let out a ridiculous Haaa! And her funky hats with her bird sitting on top. Great stuff! Not a masterpiece of a movie, but one that at least makes you "feel" a bit.

The only thing though is that people with Asperger's are supposed to have difficulty with social interaction (I don't have Apergers but have such a difficulty). Radha's character had no problems whatsoever with social interaction and was very outgoing and confident. Maybe she was told to act that way or maybe it was her interpretation, but it reduced the believability of the character, and the story.
In real life someone like her at her age would be 10-15 years into a long-term relationship by the time she met Hartnett's character.
