Most Americans first saw Piers on America's Got Talent. This was another imported UK show after the success of American Idol and they used the same format. 3 judges give their opinions on contestants. 2 of the judges were likable and the last one was a jerk. Simon Cowell started this with his UK show and became a star for being mean to people on Idol.
For some reason, the producers of AGT had 2 judges from the UK on a show called AMERICAS got talent. I never understood this and still do not.
Piers was selected to be the Simon of AGT. He was a dick to Americans. The whole point of that spot is to be extra critical. Pretty much: to be a dick that nobody likes.
So Piers was introduced to the USA as a dick that nobody likes and he did nothing to change that image. He was not a beloved TV character. He was the dick that told American's with dreams that they sucked.
So the move to give him a show to replace Larry King was doomed to fail before he even started. He then jinxed himself by trying to compare himself with the likes of Larry King and Howard Stern when he was not even in the same league.
First impressions do matter. Our first impression of him will continue to stick until he does something to change that image. Unfortunately for him, he dug himself into a deeper dick hole while hosting his terrible show.

I'm a huge ST:TOS fan, and
I doubt 45 years from now, people will gather from around the world for a "Piers Morgan Convention
." ;D I'd wager even though the original cast will be departed there will still be celebrants of ST:TOS and it's spin-offs and films.
Haha
In, there is some parallel universe where such a thing will exist. It is also in Pier's head all the time.

You know I never liked Piers Morgan and I'm glad they pulled the plug on his show, but I'm not sure it's accurate to say he failed. His show was on the air for 3 years. The original Star Trek only lasted 3 years.
