I would rather set myself on fire than read one of her Harry Potter books but I don't understand why people hate her.
I live in Edinburgh and work in the railway station and years ago they made a documentary about her, this was when she was a new author on the rise,I had to hang around and make sure the camera crew did not do anything dangerous while filming her getting on to a train.
She was cheerful considering she was getting filmed all the time,we used to see her in the station all the time and she used to chat to people who approached her but of course when Harry Potter made her a superstar we stopped seeing her around so much.
She used to teach at my old school and it seems she was popular when she taught there.
She has made loads of money and is married to a handsome young doctor but these facts are no reason to hate her.
She has not become a tax exile and she has given lots of money to charity.

I mean something that people sign up to to be part of a group
Lol, what?
You don't have to sign up for anything. You could do what normal people do and just read the books or not and thats the end of it.
Reading a book doesn't equate to a life long membership with all the weirdos out there.
Watching an episode of Star Trek doesn't mean you have to tag along to Comic Con every year.
Babies kill TV shows!

also they are a cult
So is Star Trek.
Also, it's only the first 2 Harry Potter installments that are childish. Beyond that, I honestly would NOT recommend HP to younger children. Ultimately, the entire HP saga is about family & being ripped apart & finding healing in the end. The magics is only a side effect like say the techno-babble is only a side effect of Star Trek. (In fact there is so much Star Trek similarities in Harry Potter that I often wonder if she's a Trekkie. Even the phrase 'fully functional' shows up once in the book Goblet Of Fire. I'm not even kidding! LOL) The books get darker from part 3 onward & the movies have scary scenes in them. There is murder, betrayel, battles, a brutal werewolf transformation (it's better in the books than in the crappy CGI movie scenebut the theme is still portrayed) & yes even sex in the later ones though the sex is glossed over. Actually no not really. Anyone knows Sirius Black was a player when he was at Hogwarts. While there aren't any actual sex scenes in the books or movies you can immediatly know when one has recently happened due to the 'aftermath'. There's a few marriages to, building up on the sexuality theme. Also the chemistry between Sirius Black & Remus Lupin is so well written that the actors Gary Oldman (Sirius) & David Thewlis (Remus) were actually told to act 'just a little gay' for each otherjust in case Rowling took the pair that far in later books. I'm not kidding! Still think this is for children? (Nothing against gay folk by the way, I'm bisexual myself but stillkids should be kids. They can read/view the 'juicy bits'
when they're older.)Yeah, didn't think so! Sirius/Remus show up in book/movie 3 by the way.
And also 2 or three F-words believe it or not in the final book (spoken by Ron Weasley). Not in the movie. One btch word in the book AND its corresponding movie. (By Molly Weasley, Ron's mother.)
Definetly NOT for children.
You get to 'grow up' with Harry. Start when he's 11 & get old with him.
(Thewlis)SHOOT ME!
(Leo)HOW CAN I, YOU STUPID FCK?! YOU'D JUST BLOWN A HOLE IN MY HAND!!

Well because I am an adult, sorry if that upsets adults who read the books, also they are a cult,I don't mean like a religion I mean something that people sign up to to be part of a group,I have no interst in magic or stories set in childhood so why would I read this stuff.
You have a very narrow minded view of her work if that's how you feel. The Harry Potter books are loved by millions, adult and child alike, because they are exceptionally well written books full of engaging, likeable characters that speak to many of us on many different levels. This cult status it has developed due to the films and spin-off media is distressing, to say the least, because it's stopping people from reading the books who might otherwise like them. They are remarkable works of literature, simple as, and should not be viewed as childish or cultish due to the subject matter of witchcraft and wizardry.
But to your original point, people who claim to "hate" Jo Rowling are confusing personal hatred with jealousy. They don't know her so they can't truly hate her, they are merely angered by the fact she has so much money and is constantly in the public eye. They may not like how she comes across in interviews or at press events but without getting to know what she's really like away from the camera they can never claim to truly hate her.
