Although I thought Tilda was excellent in Michael Clayton, I remember when the critics awards started coming out, Amy Ryan literally won almost every one of them. And I figured that she had it in the bag. Most years, when the actor or actress cleans up the critics awards, its pretty likely they'll go all the way. And yet, something happened on the way to the Oscars and even the Globes. Anyone else find that weird and does anyone have any theories as to why this even happened?

2008 Best Supporting Actress WINNERS:
Golden Globe(GG): Cate Blanchett ("I'm Not There")
Screen Actors Guild (SAG): Rudy Dee ("American Gangster")
BAFTA: Tilda Swinton ("Michael Clayton")
Oscar: Tilda Swinton ("Michael Clayton")
Amy Ryan appeared to be a front runner for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar, because she won many of the early critic awards. However, she failed to win any of the major awards, so by the time the Oscars rolled around Tilda Swinton was favored to win, because she was her movie's best chance for an Oscar.
"Gone Baby Gone" received 1 Oscar Nomination : Best Supporting Actress - Amy Ryan vs "Michael Clayton" received 7 Oscar nominations, including:
*Best Picture - Sydney Pollack
*Best Director -Tony Gilroy
Best Actor - George Clooney (Daniel Day-Lewis won for "There Will Be Blood")
*Best Supporting Actor - Tom Wilkinson
Best Supporting Actress - Tilda Swinton (WInner)
*Best Screenplay - Tony Gilroy (Diablo Cody won for "Juno")
*Best Original Score ("Atonement")
*"No Country for Old Men" won Best Picture / Best Director / Best Supporting Actor / Best Adapted Screenplay
In comparison, front runner and Best Supporting Actor - Javier Bardem won all the major awards (GG, SAG, BAFTA), including the Oscar.
Amy Ryan's nomination was her reward and recognition. She's now a great stage actress with a movie career. She was great in "Capote" (2005).

When Academy members vote for performers, it's a little like voting for a prom queen in high school. It's not like it's actually the prettiest girl who wins, it's usually the person running who's the most POPULAR.
Ryan was primarily known as a New York stage actress when she was nominated. The vote was also split because Ruby Dee, a popular actress who also figured in the Civil Rights Movement, was nominated. After the votes got spread out, Tilda Swinton had the edge simply because she'd been around longer (i.e., had worked with more voters) while consistently giving solid performances.
Oscars are often given for cumulative work, or years of building up good will. I think that's what happened the year Ryan was nominated, because technically, her performance is amazing. There's not a single moment that could be better, and it's a VERY demanding role.
