Twenty years before ' Mississippi Burning ' he might've made a good ' Sheriff Gillespie ', in ' In the Heat of the Night '. Of course, he would've been too young for the part. However, if he was in his forties, as Steiger was at the time, he might've been able to pull it off. Probably not as well as Steiger did, though.
