He was good in films like "Werewolf" and "That Thing You Do" yet his career went south.

he started acting too old was the problem.
the only reason im answering this question is because i came here after seeing him in the scream tv series. i looked him up wondering if it was the same guy from dead man on campus and it was. i was confused because he plays the dad on scream but was playing a teenager in the late 90s.when he was clearly pushing 30
i cant believe hes 45 now. that means he was 28ish when he played an 18 yr old in dead man on campus. he was in his mid 20s by the time he got his first acting roles and by the time he got going in mainstream films he would have been around 30 and type cast himself as a young teeny booper. its hard to break out of that mold if you dont give yourself the time and when you start late u basically become too old to play the young parts and too type cast to play the old parts. leaving you with nowhere to go. it happens to a lot of people who play young characters when theyre old (denise richards was another one)

Im wondering the same thing as Im watching him right now in a silly Jean-Claude Van Damme film. Yes, hes worked steadily over the years, but after That Thing You Do! I thought he was going to be much bigger.

Check out his filmography. Up to and including the year 2000, he had a promising film career. Then, for whatever reason, he seemed determined to work in television.over and over againunsuccessfully.A few episodes here, a season there, but nothing solid. Then the first movie he does in his film return isAir Buddies, which is the 6th film in the Air Bud franchise. I don't know who to be more disappointed inhim or his agent! Dude, your big return to film after 6 years and you do it with an Air Bud movie?! Way to kill your career!

Well to be fair, it could be worse, he has been a working actor for a long time and worked on several television shows and plays.
However, I must agree that he should have had a much bigger career overall, and really had the potential to be in bigger film projects.
I loved the guy back in the day and followed his career, but I knew he was never gonna become a big name.
