In Rod's case, indeed they DO! Too bad he couldn't lay OFF the cigarettes, though!

Yes, he was really 5'4".
But he looked taller on film, didn't he? Especially the small screen in black-and-white.
And he didn't stand next to anyone during his intros really. So people couldn't really tell. Height was more important then than it is today, really. Size, statureit all matters. Always has and will.
He also created, wrote and hosted "The Night Gallery" which was in color where his shortness and facial imperfections were more obvious. He seemed to play the part of a curator in a museum that was only open late at night. Always with a story behind every piece of art in sight.
And a fairly good one, in my humble opinion.
Still, he wasn't a success for his size. He wrote some of the greatest scripts the world ever saw then, battled network executives as hard as he did the Nazi krauts in WWII and had not only made one of the most classic shows there ever wasbut did all so much to help shave television into what it is today.
He has a star in his honor on the Walk Of Fame for his contribution to the idiot box. Making it a lot less idiotic. A lot deeper, smarter. Making it the respectable form of art and expression it is today.
And believe it or not folks, he was quite an athlete in his day. He not only served his country, but he fought in Golden Gloves. He won nearly every match, but lost the championship.
A remarkable feat for such a petite gentleman who's primary talent was being articulate and elequent on paper.
Apparently, he was a man of more than one mere talent.

I hear that he used to wear lifts in his shoes? And there's some story about him meeting a woman who said "oh you look like that man from 'The Twilight Zone', except shorter" and he was all embarrassed and said "no ma'am, it really is me" or something. Rather a rude woman, really
He was totally hot, even moreso with the shortness.

5'4 wasn't -as- short back then as it is now. People are getting taller every year. In another fifty years 6'0 will be the new 5'4.

He stood next to me. Read my posting of "Great Memories Of Meeting Him In Person". He was slightly taller than I so I estimate his height at about 5' 7".
