This performance was way, way too over the top theatrical and too over written. If it had been done on stage, there may have been applause but for a movie it needed to be toned down considerably.
As for the length of the performance, look at Jane Alexander's not much longer role in ATPM, totally opposite of Ms. Straight's histrionics. The fact that many thought her performance was too short to win then Ms. Straight grabs it is a sad irony.
