Three months have gone by since Donna Summer passed away. Sadly, the activity on this board has virtually stopped.
I still listen to her music every day, and feel the sadness of her loss but I also feel gratitude for the great music she left behind.
The other night, I was driving in Los Angeles and the radio had a "70's at 7" program. None other than "Bad Girls" came on, and I cranked it up and loved it as much as ever. I never get tired of hearing her great voice.

Well, you have to remember this is a essentially a movie website and Donna was a musician so I'm not suprised the posting has pretty much stopped, perhaps there are music and Donna fan websites were there are more active message boards. Personally I am just happy the threads and posts are so respectful and courteous, just as often as not the star boards are infested with trolls who write insulting things about the star to try to get a rise out of their fans, or some fan of a rival star comes on it trying to pick a fight. So the board may not be "hopping" but it's classy and respectful and that's much better IMO.
I didn't watch the Emmys but am glad to hear they did not forget her in their memorial tribute. Even though she wasn't a regular on any series she was on television many, many times for over 35 years and I love to watch dvds and videos of those appearances. I never saw Donna Summer ever "phone in" a performance she always gave her all and was always outstanding.

She has not disappeared from my mind or heart, I still listen to her music same as I did when she was alive, that will never change. I have to crank up MacArthur Park when I am feeling sad, it seemed to capture the essence of who she was. There will never be another like her.

I heard Barbra Streisand sang "No More Tears (Enough is Enough)" recently in one of her Brooklyn concerts and mentioned her friend Donna, and that's certainly more than enough for me. A true talent honoring another true talent, just like it should be. I don't think neither Lady Gaga nor Katy Perry (or any other teen idol) can do justice to the Queen of Disco.

You know what is even sadder Is the silence from the artists of today! In this download instant music generation, couldn't say Lady Gaga or Katy Perry do a cover of her songs? There was a lot of sadness at her death, but this is MONTHS later, SOMEONE could do a cover tribute by now!!? I saw on itunes on a new Pet Shop Boys single they do a Bee gees cover in honor of Robin Gibb. I know all the tv tributes so far have fallen flat, Hopefully next years Grammys and Oscars will do a better job (btw where is DWTS and the dancers on her tribute? She appeared on there and it is a dance show!).
The REAL people that matter though are her fans! I have just been on iTunes and found some amazing stuff! Go on iTunes and type "donna summer". Scroll down past music videos and movies to "podcasts". If you search people's podcasts on or just after May 17 you will find some amazing hour plus mixes from Donna Summer fans ALL FREE! My fav mixes are by DJ b Desk'ness called "Lady Of The Night: Tribute to Donna Summer and ABEL AGUILERA'S DONNA SUMMER TRIBUTE!
Check them out!

"I went to the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles a few weeks ago, and they had a special Whitney Houston exhibit. It was a great tribute to a great artist who deserves lots of recognition. Maybe they can do a Donna Summer tribute next".

Donna deserves every single tribute she might be given, since she's still recognized as one of the biggest stars in pop music history. No offense intended to Houston fans, but back in the day Donna Summer was a much bigger star all over the world, not only in the US, and we should take into account there wasn't MTV, cable TV nor internet those days; it was popularity gained because of pure talent and charisma.
Here in South America she's still much beloved and missed, and the day she passed away everybody, even the younger generations, were surprised at it. Even people who are 20-25 know who Donna Summer was. Only when Michael Jackson died people here reacted that same way. Just like him, Donna Summer is pop royalty.

"Live and More" was my first album as well. I put this and an ABBA album on my Christmas list, and I received two ABBA albums instead (what was Santa thinking?) Turns out my older sis wanted L&M for Christmas as well (and we were a great brother/sister team when it came to sharing albums) and her then boyfriend was supposed to get it for her for Christmas. (I was 15, she and her bf were both 17). For some reason, he never did so neither one of us had it that Christmas (1978).
However, I was smart enough to get my Christmas money and make a trip to the record store one day and buy the album myselfa snowy day in early January, 1979when school was dismissed early. I'll never forget - the album was 'on sale' for $7.99 which was a lot of money back then for a 15 year old!
Paul Ryan's proposal is a budget that goes against the teachings of Jesus.

Yea, it's sad but it is also a tribute to the honorable life she led. Think about it, the only people we still talk about (Judy, Elvis, Michael and Whitney all of whom I love) all had drama and/or scandal in their lives. I guess it's true that the real reward lies in heaven (i'm not a religious person, more spiritual). I remember saying to friend about the time Whitney died, that someday Donna's music would be more sad to me than happy. Unfortunately, that day came this past May, and though I still cry every now and then (like now, while I'm typing), I still rejoice in all the HAPPINESS her music brought to my life!
Live & More was the first Donna Summer album I owned. I remember puuting it on my Christmas list (probably put Donna Summer Last Dance and my parents bought me Live & More since Last Dance was only on that and T.G.I.F. soundtrack). I also remember buying her earlier albums and being bummed because they were slower than the "live" versions. Live and More was proof positive she was an amazing artist. Forget the disco stuff she sang Gershwin, Ellington and Bergman/Hamlish as good, if not better than ANYONE! Disco (according to the Rock crowd) was NOT supposed to sound this good LIVE!
My Dad died at 63 and it is WAYYYYYY too young. The only reason I get sad is I know she had sooooo much more to give! I pray that her estate starts releasing her unheard material REAL SOON!
I LOVE Donna Summer FOREVER!!!

Two Donna Summer songs I have recently discovered and listened to often the past few months:
Down Deep Inside I never really listened to this song until about a month before she died. I didn't like the film when I saw it. Finally I listened to the song on youtube, and I was totally blown away. I've always enjoyed John Barry's songs, and this is one of his best, and Donna's vocal performance is great (as usual). It's also interesting to hear her work with someone beside Moroder at that time.
The Way We Were I never bought Live and More. It's one of the few Donna albums I neve111cr owned. After she died, I listened to her version of this classic for the first time, and it was very emotional for me. Somehow it seemed like a farewell statement. Streisand obviously did a great version of this song, but Donna brings out a different dimension in the song and it differs from the Gladys Knight version, too. Donna gives it a more gentle, subtle rendering.
