MOST African Americans are racially mixed.
The two concepts, the first an ethnicity and the other a broad descriptor of racial heritage, DO NOT CANCEL EACH OTHER OUT.
African Americans' ancestors have been in the US since 1619, and there was considerable racial mixture with Europeans and Native Americans (before, during (1643-1865) and after the period of legalized slavery, as well as in-migration and circulation of Black people (the Anglophone West Indies, Haiti, Cuba, etc.) from the Caribbean and even Latin America.
Sunjata is racially mixed AND African American. Like Wellington Miller, the Rock, and countless other actors out there.

He claims to be bi-racial. His stage last name of "Sunjata" is the derivative name of a Mali Empire Warrior titled Sundiata (Sunjata). He has stated this type of personal info in interviews.
From http://www.playbill.com/features/article/87165.html,
"Proud of his mixed-race heritage, Sunjata notes, "I'm Irish-German and African-American." At birth, his name was Daniel Sunjata Condon, "and it still is, but I wanted to avoid the 'condom' references [to his surname] that I grew up hearing at school. Not that I'm ashamed of my name; it's a great Irish name. And now that I see that there are some heavy-hitters in Hollywood with the name Condon, I think, 'Maybe I should have kept it.' But I'm totally joking. I love the name Sunjata." He was an only child "until I was ten. Then my beautiful sister, Leah, came along."
Furthermore, how often do full-blooded Puerto Rican go to a well-known Historically Black College like Florida A&M University? There are a few Latinos there but most of them are Floridians who could afford the tuition of FAMU, oppose to U of Miami.

Have you not noticed all the ethnicity threads already in these forums?
By the way one could be African American and still racially mixed. It doesn't have to be an either/or scenario.
