There is a great recorded tape of him talking about Russell. It is with a critic who also wrote a book on THE DEVILS. His name Richard Crouse. Another big fan of Russells is Bazz Lurhman. From what I understand he borrowed a 35 mil b68print of THE BOYFRIEND before he did Moulin Rouge.

He loves Ken Russell! How did you guess? I think his Halloween movie list mentions that he watches The Devils every month.

Ridley Scott (The Counselor he loves somehow)
Does he? I'm going to Google that immediately!
I loved The Counselor and actually wondered if del Toro liked it. I'm not surprised that he does, because Counselor is way, way ahead of its time with regards to how it depicts U.S.-Mexican relations. It also has a lot of good symbolism (imo) and great black humor bits. Plus, Scott is one of del Toro's idols.
