Liv Ulmann and Faye Dunaway are been two of major actress of their period; fine performer in drama, famous especially in 60s and 70s; Liv in Bergman movies and in few italian pictures, Faye with the greatest american directors. Both are been fine and sensitive actresses with a similar acting style and even a certain fisical likeness. It is difficult to choose one between the two but I Think that Liv was better because as actress was a superior level of sensitiviness and she's more coherent in her career without never to accept bad pictures and horrid character, coming to arrangement for money like on the contrary Faye does (Supergirl, The Wikced Lady ). Liv wins.

Well it really doesn't matter - as this user who originally posted this thread, is nothing but a troll who goes from Faye board to Faye board causing trouble just because he didn't like her performance in "Supergirl." Nobody pay attention.

Liv Ullmann by miles. Probably my favourite actress.
I always thought Dunaway over-acted a little in Network and Bonnie & Clyde. She was still good though.

To the OP: Dunaway is an overacting, talentless hack - comparing her with Liv is absolutely insane!

You bet Liv "wins"! In fact, I think there's no comparison between the two.
(No offence to Dunaway or her fans.)

The greatest with Liv, is that one 100% knows she was/is a real actress. She is so extremely different in real life, than the roles she has played. Other than her and Brando, it is really hard to tell just how much many others really are "acting"!?
I have not seen many of the classic great actors and actresses in interviews. But today, one gets to see them all the time. Time and time again I see the exact same person giving the interview, as the one the person just played on screen. But I think most of us both agree and know this already.
As far as I know, I don't think she has ever played anyone similar to her own self. But then again, just like with Brando, acting has always been seen on as a challenge for her. Only selected few do pick films almost solely on challenge.
Other than that, I agree with the other posters. The "crap" roles ruin much for Dunaway. But even without them, I think Liv is a level above. Liv is in the elite class. One of very, very few which can be debated as the16d0 best.

I beleive you are right. Liv was also the favorite because she did not receive a nomination for Scenes From A Marriage. This despite a petition signed by many in the industry including 4 of the actresses who were eventually nominated.
Your mentioning the show made me dig out my copy and watch it again. It was much more streamlined than the year before. This was due to Billy Friedkin's taking over the reigns.

A little late but
Liv was the hands down favorite to win the Oscar for Face to Face in 1976. Liv was even tapped to present the prior award (Best Actor). When Faye Dunaway won for Network, the surprise was evident on all 5 of the actresses nominated. Even Faye looked shocked and said "I didn't expect this just yet" It was difficult choice to make in 1976 as both were superb.
I've often heard that the real reason Liv did not win was theb68 industry pressure (due in part to the influence of MPAA chief Jack Valenti) not to give a major award to a foriegn language film.
I'm not sure if that is true. However, the 49th Academy Awards was the first time since his rein at MPAA that Valenti was not asked to particpate in the Award show. This could be because of lingering animosity between him and producer William Friedkin.
Also of note:
Watching the program recently I was struck by the fact that Mrs. Peter Finch (who was called up by Paddy Chayevsky to accept for her late husband) was relegated to a back row and that in getting up she had to pass an obviously displeased Valenti in the same row!

Peraphs in 70s it's true that Dunaway was great but watch her in Supergirl, Dunston checks in, The wicked lady, the Tempetc etc she was dreadful.

I enjoy Ullmann's acting but I value Dunaway's skills more. She was a very sharp and powerful performer. Her edge was keener than Ullmann's, IMO.

I do apprciate Faye's work though and still think she is one of the best.
